Looking for that EXOTIC ITALIAN SOUND exhaust . . .

Can you get a set of 180 degree headers for that small block? I once heard a Dodge 340 with 180 headers and it shrieked!

When I was referring to 180 degree headers, I was referring to a design, not a brand. There's no way to make a Chevy V8 sound like a Ferrari V8 ( or 6) with a a flat crank except by changing how the exhaust handles the flow. Essentially the 180 degree headers treat the American V8's exhaust like it was 2 4 cylinder engines

The downside is that the tubes are very difficult to fit, as they wrap under the block to tie the headers together. It's very impractical for a street car. The sound, however, is glorious.

If you've got a local short track or dragstrip, go down there and talk to the racers. Someone most likely has a set on a SBC.

 

You could always play your favorite Ferrari sounds CD very loud when you drive your car.

 

To be honest, I just dont think you can get even close to matching it. You have to recall, your Ferrari was just coming into its power band where your Pontiac is about done, roughly 4000 rpm. The Ferrari also had chain driven cams, and carbs, which augmented the sound. Maybe you should look at finding an older Alfa Spyder, or GTV. It still wont make the right sound, but with twin chain driven cams, and side draft webers, you could sure get close. Look on Ebay, thier kinda cheap.

 

Well, its just hard to get a high wailing shriek at 4,000 rpm

 

For what it's worth, the LT1 doesn't exactly run out of steam at 4 grand....

 

It's not worth much, since a '92 Trans Am
doesn't have an LT1 in it. It has a Tuned
Port 305 or 350 whose tongue is hanging
out at about 4600rpm. Those long runners
on the TPI cars are great for torque, but
it is what it is...


Still, a properly built American V8 can rev
just as high as a Ferrari, despite being a
pushrod design. Still, it's no Ferrari... I'd
throw a Flowmaster exhaust on it to get
a pleasing sound and start saving up for
that next exotic Italian...

Hey, when I was 15 yo, first car I ever owned was a '66 GTO, 421 HO w tri power, 4 speed, with a (get this) 6.13:1 rear axle. Dumb lil ol me didnt know any better than to just let er fly, so I'd wind that old Sun tach up to 8K in every gear. It was only when I started to listen to people and look at grenaded motors that I began to understand they didnt like being wound up that high. So yeah, you can hit 8 grand with a big V8, at least once. But the trick is to get your buddy ahead of you who has lower gears, and ride his a$$ until you start to see smoke swirling off his car. Then back off Quick!

 

The closest you can get is an Ansa exhaust, however...they dont make them for American cars.

Honestly, its impossible to make an American V8 sound Italian.
