200 years from now

Horse racing (a very ancient racing sport) is still pretty popular, but airplane racing (slightly more "modern" than cars) is a niche sport. The difference is that there are too many dimensions and variables in airplane racing for most people to understand; while most fans can emphathize with the horse/car racing experience.

So I think car racing and hence performance cars have a good chance of still being popular even 200 years into the future. The problem will likely be that it will be contained to specialized race courses and specialized race drivers (as with horse racing tracks and jockeys) and the average person won't have the experience to know or care why an Enzo or Fxx or their successors are better than other cars. Instead the average person will be forced to use mass transit or connect their car's autopilot to roadway monitors and flow control systems which automatically maintain speed & separation due to the huge increase in dailiy traffic.

 

Who cares? The daisies we've been pushing up will be long gone and even the 'most signifigant' FChat member will only be a historical footnote (unless you happen to solve the world air problem according to Mullet Jr.).

Please provide some information to back your thesis.. I have a hard time believing that one wooded acre produces less "oxygen" than the same parcel utilizing an edible fruit or vegetable.

You can make several arguments about over-population (water consumption, residential space, even increased electrical demands) but saying that our breatheable air is in peril because we're replacing trees with something more efficent (per square inch) is just stupid.

Yes, it was much better when we used leeches and bloodletting.. at least the morons could line-up and off themselves before they could pass on their genetic information to the next generation. Unfortunately modern medicine will keep you alive (even allowing a tool like yourself to impregnant a woman after death) for maybe 100 years.

If that's what you mean, then yes, it will be our downfall.

I don't think people will even think about Ferrari's or automobiles in general unless you are a historian. There will be some other form of transportation none of us in our wildest dreams could think of now.

I mean how many of you would look at the "rides" from 200 years ago and think, damn thats a sweet donkey, check out the wheels on that carriage.....

They will have value only as a collectable.

Which horse carriage from 1805 is now the most coveted? One top line brand has as much value as another. If it was made for the wealthy, it will be worth marginally more than a handsom. Condition is everything.

A surviving Ferrari, any "common" model, will have the same value as any Lamborghini, Lotus, Porsche in similar condition. Will anyone value a 288 GTO over a 512 TR? Probably not.

Etruscan Chariot, circa 530 BC - oldest reference is @ 2,000 BC - Greeks used chariots before Estrucans, then Romans - 1 dude - Scorpus - won 2,000 races before he was killed - he was 27.

Scorpus was quite influential, as car nuts still use their rides to score *****.

 

Won't do you any good in 200 years time.

 

Interestingly enough, if they didn't change their reins every 3 years, they ran the risk of breaking them and having the entire car self destruct. Not cheap!

The 308, and its bigger brother the 365 BB are the most beautiful cars built, in the world, period. If we are still around 200 years from now, and still civilised, Ferrai's will trade like the fine art paintings do today. But just because many kids dont know anything about a Bugatti, doesnt mean anything more than how many people know or appreciate the Cistine Chapel. Enough historians do, and thats all that matters. I honestly feel that as time marches on, the cars built during Mr. Ferrari's lifetime will be far more significant than those built after. And if history remembers, then the cars that are most significant today, should be equally so in the future.

 

In 200 years all the Ferraris that have been made up until now will look pretty much the same to the average Joe, just as all Roman or Greek buildings look the same to most us now. To his eye a 250 TDF will be sort of like a 430 Coupe, particularly as they will be painted the same red and have the same black tires.

And you know, he might have a point.....
