I am looking to purchase my first Ferrari (360 or maybe wait to I can afford a 430) and I am not sure which transmission to get (F1 vs. 6 speed). This car will be a third car.

Currently I have a '02 Porsche and originally wanted a tip, after several conversations (Scottie, Barton, Andy, Martin, Bill), I decided to get a 6 speed. I am so happy that I purchaased a stick vs a tip. I would have been sooooooooo board if I had the tip. I drove an F1 and it makes all the cool sounds, but it is generated by the computer. I also drove a stick and enjoyed the ability to control the car.

Also I need to get a baby seat in. Can I turn off the air bag???

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Go for the manual 6spd.You feel more connected with your Ferrari in a manual as opposed to a F1.leave the baby seat duties to your other car's.

I'm a big fan of 6 speed, but unfortunately they look so out of place on the 430 ( on purpose? ) still looks pretty good on the 360.

I have a stick in my 430 and,no, it does not look out of place. What looks oout of place is 2 pedals in a sports car! Anyway, the 430 has the US nanny government required car seat hookups and you can turn off the air bag with the key. Don't know about 360's.

    F1 vs stick:
I drove 360s in both setups. I bought a 2001 F1 because it felt so integrated
into the car that it actually made me feel more connected. The 6sp
stick was nice also, so the decision was somewhat difficult, but with
the F1 I felt that I was much more in control and the shifts were very
    quick.

I recommend you try both if you haven't already done so. BTW, I also
tried both on the 355, but there the stick won out in my view.

    Disabling the airbag:
The 360 parts manual shows an elaborate gizmo that mounts onto the
central tunnel and allows you to use a key to disable the airbag when
desired. I did not see this in any of the 360s I shopped for, so I expect
it is very rare. I also suspect it is very expensive to retrofit. More than
likely there is a cheaper way to just disable the airbag permanently, but
it is probably hard info to find.

I prefer the 6 speed set up. I agree with everyone else, you feel much more connected to the car. You feel like your driving, not playing a video game. The reality, however, is that these days the F1 transmission will bring you more money when you try to sell the car later on. If you plan on selling the car within a few years then the stick shift tranny is, unfortunately, an option you'd lose money on in the end. If that doesn't bother you though, then stick shift all the way.

I disagree. There is a definite market for the 6-spd, and for many of those buyers, it is a deal-breaker if the car is not 6-spd. I would bet in most cases the F1 cars do not retain their 10k cost difference in resale value. There is also the out of warranty F1 repair cost factor that scares many buyers.

You are completely misinformed. With paddles, you might get your 10K back on a brand new car, but it's value declines with age. Our local dealer pays MORE for sticks on 360's once the warranty is out. Aftermarket buyers are more inclined to want sticks than original buyers.

Interesting, I always gathered that it was the other way around. Guess I was wrong. Learn something new everyday!
