Time for another drive, this being the 2nd installment of our commemorative drive on Route 66. We'll meet at 10:00am on the West Side of the "Harold Washington Library" in downtown Chicago. That is Plymouth street to be exact, right off Congress Street (easy to get to from the Ike, the Kennedy and LSD). Roll off as usual at 10:30am. We'll head over to the Begin/End of Route 66 for a quick foto stop and then Frank will lead us down memory lane of what is left of Route 66. We did this ride last year and got some nice foto ops along the way as several places maintain the old signs. We'll have lunch at a Route 66 restaurant, that has even made it to the Route 66 hall of fame for its authentic look and finger licking food. The place is btw near the interstate, so buzzing back to town from there is a very quick (and fun) ride as well. So, who's in? 308 Frank 308 Dave V8 Andreas Image Unavailable, Please Login
Great! We can use fotographers who can set the car to autoshift. Lineup: 308 Frank 308 Dave 355 Carla V8 Andreas In case somebody just wants to join for lunch: The restaurant is called "Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket" and it is on 79th Street and Old US 66 in WIllowbrook. I'm guessing we're gonna be there by around 12:30pm. Easy parking in front (cars will be viewable at all times).
Yes,'Del Rhea's Chicken Basket' is on an Actual Stretch of the original Route 66 Road. Which is now a Frontage Road for I-55. (Bring your Hammer and Chisel for an Actual Piece-just kidding.... ) The Restaraunt has been there all through those Years of the "Golden Age" of Automobile Travel. And,the Food is just Fantastic,Home Cookin',Grandma Style!....(Ask Rick and Andreas) We will stop for Lunch, then,if anyone is up to it. There are some very nice 2 Lane Roads that cut through the Forest Preserves about 10 minutes away. Beautiful Scenery....a couple nice Lakes....a Nature Center....55 MPH Posted Speed Limits...Then,back to the Highways for your ride home. Also, when we meet Downtown. We will be able to do a Complete "Round Trip" of Route 66,in about 10 minutes-without passing through Oklahoma,Arizona, and to San Bernardino and Back..... (And,we aren't telling you How unless you show up!!! So There!!!) BTW....on future Drives. If you have Walkie Talkies, bring them along. We've used them before on other Drives. They may not work well in the City, but are usually good for a few blocks outside of the City. And,we need to make a Cell Phone list, via FChat "P/M".
Andreas, You can pencil me in for that drive.... Just might have a few things that may come up by then. I am starting to hear 'not normal' sounds from my car. So, we'll see... Plus, i may get called to head down south to help with damage assesment on this Katrina mess.... Plus it may snow that day.... hahaha... Tod
Oh No!!! You CAN"T have anything left to make any "un-normal sounds" that hasn't been fixed already!... Hey,just take it over to Continental and let them have a looksee. They have some absolutely incredible Cars there right now, including a Silver/Black Daytona Spider. (Rick, you MUST check that baby out.... ) Yeah,I think that you will really like this Drive. It goes from Downtown Chicago, out to the Wide open spaces in no time. With Lots of "Route 66" Businesses along the way for some Photo Ops. Last year when we did it. I just kept thinking about all of the People who, back in the day, took it out West in search of a Better Life. Or,to try to make it Big in Hollywood. (How many took that same drive back?... ) Or,just a Family Vacation. Make SURE that everyone who comes brings a camera. LOTS of really great Photo Ops! Walkie Talkies, too,if you have them. Then, the place that we stop for Lunch,"Del Rhea's Chicken Basket" is really cool. Great Home cooked food. Really neat old atmosphere. Then,a short 10 Minute Drive to the Forest Preserves for some fun Driving and more Photo Ops. Then,we will be right by I-55 and IL.Route 83.(Burr Ridge/Willowbrook) So.very easy access to any road to get home for everyone.
Want to go but I am not sure if I can make it just yet... Are things going to be clear this weekend to drive? Hummm..If anyone is up for a Sat. drive this weekend I should be able to swing that. Thanks. Vince
Is it just that next Saturday is not a good day for you guys? As far as I am concerned,we can do it on Sunday,too.....As long as those that already commited to Saturday can. Either day works for me. What about everyone else? Personally,I think that Sundays are best for Drives. Usually a little bit less Traffic than on Saturdays. Let me know what y'all think....
Oooops, I meant Next Saturday. I agree, Sunday's are a better day to do drives, but the Bears play on Sundays now.
I'm up for either day but would prefer Sundays Bears or not (are you watching them now!) I would rather be cruising. Just spent all day yesterday up around northen IL and around Lake Geneva with the toy. Weather wasn't great but had a ball all day, leaves are changing and the back roads were fun. Now to clean up for the Rt 66 cruise
Current Lineup: 246 Jenny 308 Frank 308 Dave 328 Tod 355 Carla V8 Andreas Daytona-R Rick M3 Awais I'd like to leave it for Saturday so Da Bears fans don't get left out.
If you guys do it on Sunday I'll find a way to join up too, but Saturday's no good for me... Besides, don't the Bears have a bye week this week?
CRAP...... Sorry guys, going to have to back out of this one. Business calls, they are sending me to Phoenix Thursday night until next monday for some supplier issues we have to deal with. So, neither days now will work for me. My car has been sleeping for the last month, i want to drive her too.... But hey, at least that sleeping isn't in the service garage... hahaha... I wish i could take her as carry on luggage to PHX though.... hmmmm??? -Tod
Hey guys, and girls. We should be there- if the car doesn't make it Haley's gonna have me sent off to a camp for reprogramming people who take too long. Today it was off getting the exhaust installed, it is supposed to be home tonight - there was some concern about getting it home with the rain, but we're busting our butts working on getting it ready. It looks good, but there's all these pesky little details that are required to make it driveable ... We miss you all, I should have made sure we had another fun car running and ready so we would have missed less fun this summer Chelle
I think everyone is drooling to see it. Hope to see it this weekend if not then maybe at the Hooter's show. NOW THAT A REPLCIAR!

O.K. Folks. Don't forget. Here is the Info.again, (above) as to where we we'll meet. What time. Etc...Easy to find. On the NORTH Side of Congress Parkway,on the WEST side of the Library. Cars will be visible from Congress Pkwy. It is not a long drive. And the reward at the end,(Del Rhea's) is worth it. Lots of neat Photo Ops,so bring your Camera! And,if anyone is up to it after Lunch,we can take a 10 minute drive to the beautiful 2-Lane Forest Preserve Roads for another 1/2 hour or so.
