My 355 with Caprsito (and cats) has just started making a slightly rumbly noise under load. As an example, i try to keep revs under 4000 until the car has warmed up. However i've recently noticed some resonance and general grumbling if the car labours a little at low revs in 5th or 6th gear.

The engine note and exhaust however both sound their usual excellent selves once i start gunning it.

Any suggestions where the problem might lie? I know the manifolds are a weakness on the 355, but not sure what symptoms to look out for?

I think Paul (Angleboy) has the same problem. He has found out the manifold has cracked on one side. He is having the manifold replaced.

    That sounds familiar!
Below the magic 5000rpm I was getting the same rumbling sounds which eventually turned into a 'tractor' sound. I was told I couldn't do any damage to the engine it just sounds like ****. I didn't have a power problem though so I guess it depends on how far gone yours are.

If both have gone together - bad luck - otherwise it should only be one side that's gone. I've heard stories of £3000 each side for original Ferrari parts but I've also been told that they'll go again! If you have a listen close to the manifolds in turn you'll be able to hear which one it is.

Nick Cartwright has sorted mine by replacing the inner tubes with stainless steel then putting the old heat shroud back on. I haven't picked the car up yet so I don't know how much it will be.

    I'll let you know later.

    Cheers folks.

I'm not entirely convinced it's manifolds (he says gripping wallet tightly!), but i'll get Verdi's to check it out and see what they think..........

Im sure its with THICKER stainless ... not just stainless !! :) otherwise they will be just as bad a Ferrari ones and melt again around the joins. Im sure it is the case though..

The welding is crap on the orginal manifolds and not 316 SS.

I know the 348 has not this problem and think the 12 cylinders have not got the problem too.

Why is it on 355 then ???????????

correct the 12 cylinders have better manifolds and the 348 have thinner ones but they dont have the power to split the welds

In terms of the noise a 355 makes once the manifold have gone, it depends on where the manifold cracks first.

Mine both went on the join between the 'cold start air injection system' and the main manifold. This is essentially the smaller series of pipes you see above the main manifold heat shield, right up again the engine block. Air is only being pumped back through these pipes while the engine is warming up (for emissions reasons , to help the car pass emissions while the car is running inefficients at cold).

This is characterised by a 'ticking' sound only while the engine is warming up. The sound then goes once the car is at full temperature.

I believe that if you get a crack in the main manifold system, im not sure how this sounds, but it must be MORE serious, as under load at full temperature it will effect the flow and temperature of the exhaust. The sensors down stream are then going to be confused and back pressure might drop slightly and your going to get wierd vibrations as some of the exhaust fumes are forced out of the crack. I wouldnt drive it like that.

Of course it might not be a manifold at all, something else could be loose and vibrating I guess.

    Good luck

One other thing to add.. a question I suppose.. Many people have said that the Capristo back box itself does run quite hot for a sports exhaust. However Im not sure how much this statement has been backup with figures...

Anyway, if there is some truth in that, I would get your CATS inspected to see what condition they are in. Additional heat will also be transmitted back through the manifold which will not help the cracking issue, thats for sure....

I was told that too which was the only reason I went de-cate. Glad I did now.

I've also been told by a specialist that driving around with a blown manifold increases the risk of exhaust valve guide failure

Given what Graham said, check very carefully if any excess oil has been burnt recently. If in doubt stop driving the car. My bill for valve guides came to 14K, but dont let that scare you..... much.

If your valve guides go, the engine start burning 37 smaller refinery's daily oil production per second. The rest of the engine gets starved if you dont catch it in time and it all gets a little bit unhappy.

Boxer 12's dont rev up high enough to get the manifolds hot:D,thats why they dont crack.

I have a suspicion my RHS one may have gone too.

There's a company called NA Performance in the states who are making replacements. Lifetime guarantee, stainless, ceramic coated so you don't need the metal heat shield (the manifolds look lovely). 3kUSD for a PAIR!

When I nip up to see KV's patio I'm going to ask for an opinion and may well order a pair of these to try...

Stuh - nay be able to squeeze them on price if buying a few manifolds...?

one of my manifolds cracked/melted. The symtoms were a rough idle and slightly slower pick up off the line. Also it sounded like it was missing half a cylinder. No power loss up the top end, as it came back from germany like it. Bought mine from QV

i didn't have any other noises that you could hear from the engine. QV used a stethescope next to manifold to check, got it spot on. Ian

cheers m8 i will ask if they have done this because the fcar has had adiagnostics check (is ok)at graypaul and its a week now and still no news, the cat on lh side was in a bad way and from what ive read they appear to be related to manifold failure then valves!gulp.
