As a check book mechanic I have lots of questions for you Ferrari brains out there. Hope I dont over stay my welcome. I have a 308GTS QV and I am thinking of restoring her to her glory days of 1985. The outside only had 2 tiny dimples one on the hood the other on the passange side panner over the front wheel other wise the paint and body are outstanding. The inside however shows the 20 years of wear. Only 38,ooo miles on her. Should I go to a Ferrari shop and have the work done there. The place the car was originally purchased is here in Woodland Hills 6 miles from my work. Will engaging a Ferrari Dealership automatically equate to getting F***ed? (read overpaying) If I use a competent regular mechanic, will he do the same workman like job as the dealership and be as familiar with the car?? What about engine work etc??? What do you think guys?????

I would definately not use the dealer to do what sounds like upholstery work. They probably don't even have upholstery guys on staff and just sub out the work, while you get left with a nice mark-up for their trouble. You should be able to replace the carpet easily enough yourself if you wanted to, and I would call around to local car clubs and see who they recommend in your area to re-cover seats, replace other worn leather, headliner, etc. As far as replacing any switchgear and the like, any moderately competent mechanic should be able to do that provided you can locate the correct parts.

Pick the right specialist for the job.

Dents, find out who the local guys use (not just Ferrari folk, but Porsche and race guys) and go there. There's usually a small independent bodyshop around that does excellent work at a good price.

Upholstry, same thing. It's just carpet and leather.

For the fuel injection and such, look around for a place that works on older German cars, the CIS stuff is usually a mystery to the Ferrari dealer these days.

Just find your local car guys and start asking for recommendations. These cars aren't all that complicated.

If you are in Southern California the only guy I trust with my 328 is Eugenio of Eugenio's Ferrari. He has saved me thousands of dollars and knows 8 cyl. cars like nobody else. You may have to get in line but it is well worth it.
