308 gas fills slow

    Hey all,

    This has been annoying me for years . . . my 308 takes gas real slow during fill ups . . . is it:

    1. The unleaded "flap"

    2. A blockage in the venting

    If no one else has problems with the stock "flap", I'm guessing it's somthing to do with the venting/check valves/charcoal canister. I've got the psgr gas tank out right now so it's a good time for me to look at it.

    you must have a problem with the venting. My 308 fills up just fine. Check the hose between the 2 tanks, if that is pinched it would cause the tank to fill slower.

    Thanks for the reply . . . can't wait to be able to fill the car without holding the nozzle on "slow" the whole time!!!!

    Always was a little slow to fill and if I insert the nozzle and click the fill device to full speed it will "click" and shut off.

    Must stand there and slowly fill.

    Any other spot to check besides the hose between the tanks?

    My Euro 308 doesn't have the unleaded flap/nozzle fitting plate.
    It fills fast for most of a fill up. However, at stations with newer pumps, the saddle tank being directly fills seems to get ahead of gas flowing over to the other tank. If I stop & wait half a minuite for things to equalize, I can usually complete the fill-up at full feed.

    With older pumps, I can fill up at max. flow.

    The pre-unleaded carb cars fill quick, but after that, they are all slow as are 328's.

    Mine is slow too.... but if a pinch was the case, wouldnt you not be able to fill the tank completely?

    I think he's talking about the vent hose between the tanks....

    My 328 fills slowly at all gas staions except chevron. At chevron it fills as quickly as it seems to go when i step on the gas pedal.

    I don't mean pinched shut, I mean pinched smaller. A little kink perhaps? All the gas goes into the left tank, then flows through a hose to the right tank. If the hose is restricted, you have to wait for the tanks to equalize before you put more gas in.

    Like I said, my car fills up just fine.

    Okay, so it sounds like some with the flap do not have this problem . . .


    The gas pumps in CA might be more sensitive with the "fume catching" device that's on the end of the pump . . . maybe that's the reason you guys with the flap that aren't having problems don't have the "sophisticated" emissions lowering fuel pumps where you're at?

    At some stations I have to turn the handle upside down to get it to take fuel even slowly, but one or two stations it has taken fuel normally (that's in the last 10 years). I guess if I can't find anything wrong with the venting/charcoal canister, I might consider modifying the "flap".

    I have this same problem with my 78 GTS. I replaced all the hoses 2 years ago, there are no kinks, anywhere. The problem occurs even with low tanks. I don't have a solution but wish I did. There is a restrictor plate in the filler neck. I wonder if the filler hole was opened up if this would cure the problem?

    Like Sean, I found on my ex-308 was that if I rotated the filling nozzle assembly upside-down from the "conventional" position it would accept a faster flow rate without shutting off prematurely (although I still wouldn't go full blast, and you should NEVER leave the filling nozzle unattended IMO).

    my 80 gtsi ( no flap) is the same, slow fill, always clicking off, but by pulling out the nozzlel out a few inches from a fully inserted position lets it fill up at a normal rate.
