Actually, Bubba, your two 308s outside make you twice as "poor" as us single 308 owners.

I don't know the costs in other countries, but here in Italy owning a 308-328-Mondial, costs not less than 7000 - 8000 euros per year (8500-9500 US $) for taxes, maintenance and insurance, not including gasoline (that costs 1,50 euros per liter - 5,60 US$ per gallon), and everything else. If you own an "old" 512 your costs double and going on for every newer model.
The pay for an engineer here normally is 18.000,00 US$ PER YEAR !!!
So you have to be rich for any Ferrari here.

I see this as an old school/ new school kind of a harley thing. The Blue bloods with the cars that were made one of 8 or so don't look at the modern cars. Those are the cars that climb in value or at least hang on to it.

What can I say, I like red cars with black bumpers. I also like the Mondial more than the 308.

#3 isn't in that pic and is even more unloved than the Mondial, yet it is my favorite of the bunch...

    i started out this way:

i would rather have a 1970 Z28 4speed than any post 1974 Camaro or Corvette.

i would rather have a 1970 to 1973 455 4 speed Trans am ( i like 77 -79 also) than buy any of the used RAM AIR 6 speed cars that are floating around now .

that is how it all started for me. when i woke up one day and discovered i could get a nice carb Ferrari for half of what the muscle cars were selling for, i sold off all of my musclecars. ( 11 of them)

i would rather have a carb 308, a 365 gt 2+2, a 365 /512 carb B.Boxer ect than ANY of the newer cars with fuel injection, computer and emissions crap on them. if a nice TR or 512BBi shows up here, its because it was cheap :) . its my PERSONAL creed to not finance the "old" cars, i pay cash or i dont play. what are ya going to do if / when a sodium filled valve breaks off and you owe money on a broken 30 year old car ????

i could finance a nice newer used car, but i DONT LIKE any of them. the F40 and 288GTO would be mine, and are the only exception, and not for sale ever if i had the means to own and support the cars needs. the Enzo the 348/355 cars do nothing for me.

who the hell is going to fix an F1 trans when the car is 10 or 20+ years old? can you afford to fix it ????? can you get the bin files for a laptop to talk to a OBD-II or newer fcar / lambo??? there are too many 360 wonder cars out there they will be dirt cheap one day and carb 308 will be "in".

we chop up old airplanes when they are too expensive to fix and or "make" new / old parts for. theses new cars are throw aways unless cheap technology is developed for average folks to work on them .

i want to be cool like judge4re and have a harem of cars so i dont have to keep selling mine off. when one of these damn 308's sells, i am getting a carb V12 something..

    great thread.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I have around long enough that comments like this make me feel like deja vu all over again.

F1 transmissions are still mechanical parts. Yes, they require a different skill set to fix (and tools), but they can be (and will be) fixed. Granted there will be a number of old dogs that will not want to learn any new tricks. Nuthin wrong with that. However, there will be some new dogs that will fill the gap.

At the end of the day, though, I can guarantee you that the Ferrari Market Letter asking price index in 2015 for a 2000 360 will be significantly higher than a 1985 308 or a 1989 328. My logic is simple. A 2000 360 is by far a superior car than any 308/328. In other words, the best keeps on getting better.

The opposite was true for muscle cars. These cars were all about their motors. (They drove like pigs and their brakes were a joke.) But by 1974, the age of the motor was over. It was a lot of fun while it lasted. A buddy of mine in high school had a Hemi Roadrunner with drag slicks, skinny fronts, headers, glass packs, and a jacked rear that we used to drive in the snow! We didn't know that you weren't supposed to do that! (There were no annual inspections either.)

Do I currently have any desire to drive any of these old muscle cars? Nope. I don't put down those who do. Different strokes and all that.

By the same token, do I have any desire to drive a 308/328? Not really. This may seem sacrilegious, but the Porsche 911s from that era are much, much better cars. Of course, this is just one person's opinion, but I happen to agree with it.

You see, I like to drive these cars, not screw around with them. For me, it is all in how they feel behind the wheel. I don't care whether the car has carbs or a bunch of mice spinning around in a cage. The real issue is how much fun they are to drive. So, while I enjoy driving the older cars and remembering how it used to be, I much prefer driving the new ones. If you ever get a chance, take a Challenge Stradale out for a few hot laps on the track. I think you'll understand what I'm saying.

However, your mileage may vary... :)

But this is the point I was beating around. We want the cars we buy, but we don't buy all the cars we want. We buy the cars we can afford. (At least me, anyway)

While I love the car I have now, I can also love a newer car, or a 288 or a F40, but there is NFW I can pony up the cash in this lifetime.
(If the deadbeats that owed me money would pay me, I would have a newer car, but that's another thread)
So, I make do with what I can afford.

point taken Dale, and a good one at that. all i am meaning to say is as time marches on, the pre computer cars will be more desireable as they are easier to maintain for us low to mid level exotic owners. if i had the cash for an Enzo i would have my own Gulfstream or a big share in one. i love jets a hell of a lot more than any car . i just work on them for now and thats good enough. :) you are right though, i bet the younger generations probably think carbs are VOODOO and they may not want anything to with them. i would love a chance to have a carb 512BB , a Jalpa and an early Countach. even if i only have them for a short time, which is my nature, at least i got to taste them and i will get old with no regrets or " could have -should have " syndrome. ive sampled a few early 911's and a few older ones. i would have to have a 930turbo to be happy, and i would probably kill myself in the damn thing. :) a Lotus turbo is cheap fun and forgiving. have to get one of those too .....

You have a great attitude, and you clearly enjoy fiddling with em. So have at it. That's what makes the world go round.

However, I'd like to suggest that you get some track training before wringing the necks of any of these cars. These cars will bite (and hard) if you're not careful!

    A 348 is also superior to a 246.

    In 1995 a used 348 was worth $70,000 and a 246 was worth $40,000.

    Now in 2005 a 348 is worth $40,000 and a 246 is worth $90,000.

But the price gap between 360 and 308/328 in the future will be less and less as you only have to look at 355's case. Today it's about double but when 2015 comes it'll be 20% I guess!

Are you saying that comparing a Dino to a 348 is the same as a 308 to a 360?

I don't think so. All Pre-Fiat Ferraris from the 60s are headed for the sky. (I know, I know, 246s were made until 1974, but they were designed back in the 60s.)

Here is the reality: Currently 308/328 cars are fully depreciated and have been for a while. The 308s trade from $20k to $35k (for really exceptional cars). 328s trade from $30k to $60k (again for truly exceptional cars). My guess is that in 2015 these cars will still be selling in this price range.

Today, an average 2000 360 F1 goes from somewhere between $120 and $140. In ten years, I would expect to see these cars trading for, say, $65 to $85. This should be the bottom for these cars. If you're thinking that 360s will ever be a $25k car, I'd like to have some of whatever it is that you are drinking. Ain't gonna happen.
