Hello ! I have to add some oil in my recently acquired Mondial quattrovalvole of 1985 (Européan version) and I don’t find in Agip homepages the recommended oil anymore:
    Agip Sint 2000 SAE 10W50

    They still sale:
    AGIP SINT 2000 10W-40

So do you know which motor oil could be used instead here in europe ?
If you also changed the oil filter and have precise references I would be interested to know it.

Related topic: I use to put some additive in the petrol here (Lead Substitute). Which ones do you buy and where ? I use 98ron gas here in France.

Thanks a lot in advance. Sorry for the thread if already exists but I didn't find the answer yet and you know how it is ... always better to ask than to try with Ferraries...

Ciao, and see you ! Shadoko.

Have a look in the technical section. There are many good threads about which oil you should use in your Ferrari.

    Hello Shadoko

I would go for the 10W40.
Some dealers have the tendancy to put "thicker" oil in the older cars to get the oilpressure up a bit.
My dealer even fills the 328's and 348's up with Castral Racing 10W60.
    But I only want 10W40.

And is it really neccesary to put a lead additive in ??
I mean, all brands of fuel have lead substitutes mixed up in their fuels ??

I used Shell Vpower, 97 octane here for my 348. In Germany it is even 100 octane.

I am not entirely convinced that 10W40 is the best choice!

If you can't get Agip 10W50 try a different manufacturer.
I'm sure there is a 10W50 from a respected oil manufacturer.

My garage in Maastricht supplies AGIP 10W60. But I agree with Simon. Any respected brand will do.

So far as I remember there is no 10-W50 for sale anymore, it is or 10-W40
    or the 10-W60 racing oil.Rob

I´m absolutely sure that you don´t need lead substitute or another additive for the gasoline, this car run with unleaded, sure.

    Hoi Roel,
Sorry for not being more precise.
I'm referring to all of the oil company's. I was able to check around for this oil but all compagny's told me that there is only left over by the retailers and they dont preduce that 10-W50 oil anymore.

Shadoko, about the fuel additive, look in to your owners manual what is there written? I think that there is standing super fuel if I'm not mistaken, so in dat case I think you are in need of the euro 98 + additive.Rob

Hello, thanks for all comments I confirm you that I don’t find the recommended oil anymore from any company I know (10W50)

    * CASTROL: I started looking at Castrol web pages. They explicitly propose for a Mondial Quattrovalvole the following oils: (http://www.castrol.com)
Recommendation: TXT Softec 5W-40 and 15W-50 in hot countries
    or Formula SLX Longtec 0W-30
    10 liters each 12monthes or 10000km (6000miles)

very strange since first one is 5W40 and second oil is recommended usually for new cars such Audi’s where you change oil each 30000km…

    * ESSO (Exxon) or MOTUL are not selling any 10W50 (I have the full catalogue and you have all other number combinations…).

    * I found this 10W-50… but let’s forget about, It’s a Ferrari not a superbike...
BEL-RAY EXS SYNTHETIC SUPERBIKE MOTOR OIL
    Product No.: 9268 is a 10W-50 (SG/CE) and G5

Are there any Mondial quattrovalvole owners from europe here that could tell me which one they use ?

I wanted to add some to the one inside but since I don't know the exact type it's better to change all the oil. Hope it is easy on this model but I'll check the manual once I will find the oil ...

    See you !

PS: Concerning additives to the fuel: some says (Porsche owner) that this motors are made for race so no need in it but as I remember a Mondial owner told me one day that the Ferrari factory recommend the use of Lead substitute (anyway it doesn’t damage the motor particularly since it’s a 32Valves…).

    Hello !
I am making progresses, slow but sure, about which oil to use in a Mondial QV motor. I found in my papers this card but I don’t know when was it written. Anyway, it’s clear that since AGIP SINT 2000 10W/50 does not exist anymore (recommended from factory), it should be replaced by a 15W/50 as the other ones recommended by Ferrari (like Shell super plus motor oil 15W/50 or ESSO supermultigrade 15W/50).
ciao a tutti ! now I will look for some.

PS: if you are owner of one of this motors I am still curious to know what do you use for the oil?

I do not have a Mondial or a 308, but a 328, however the manual also specifies to use AGIP SINT 2000 10W/50.

Me and some other members of the European board in Spain are using Castrol TWS 10W 60 (some other places have it as RWS 10W 60), that by the way it is what Ferrari is recomending.

It is expensive, but it really is a very good oil for our cars.

Hello, I am also surprised by the absence of Quattrovalvole (mondial or 308 are same motors) engine owners here…

JBanzai, thanks for your reply but I think in Spain it is quite hot and this is why you can accept the 60 SAE grade where 50 might be better here in France (let’s say that my car will know temperatures going from -15°C up to 50°C at maximums) and is actually the grade originally recommended with AGIP. Note that Castrol Formula RS 10W-60 is not the same oil as Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60. Both exist but I am sure it is a very good one.
Also the QV mondial motor is older than yours and might be more sensitive to the appropriate choice of oil and this is why I would like (on a relatively long time scale apparently) to get a final cut on this debate.

Actually I found a card in my Ferrari manual with equivalencies between oils (I can’t post the figure unfortunately), here are the compared and recommended oils:

    * The originally used one : AGIP SINT 2000 SAE 10W50 does not exist anymore.
    * The shell Super Plus motor Oil 15W50 (semi-synthetic)
    API: SJ/CF, ACEA (A3-96, B3-98)
    * Esso uniflo supermultigrade 15W50 does not exist anymore.
The15W40 (mineral oil) can be found but I don’t know if adapted.
    API SL/SJ/CFACEA A3/B3, A2/B2
the test SL is more reliable than the SJ ones.
    * Mobil super 15W50 does not exist anymore.
    The 15W40 Mobil Super S 10W-40 (semi-synthetic) but I don’t know if adapted.

You see there very different types with mineral, semi-synthetic …

I also found a small card showing that in my car, Elf Competition oil was used but I don’t have the precise reference…
Then I noticed that on their web page they sell a 10W50 oil which seems close to the original Agip grades:
    * ELF EXCELLIUM 10W50 100% synthetic
API: SL/CF, ACEA:A3/B3, SUBARU OE Les Pleiades
    they also have:
    * ELF COMPETITION ST 15W50 Semi-synthetic
    API: SL/CF, ACEA:A3/B3, VW:500.00/505.00, MB:229.1
    * ELF SPORT CAMPIONE 10W60 100% synthetic

so next step, I just sent an e-mail to the Ferrari factory since I don’t have any echos from QV owners. See you for more oily topics…

    I have used 10W40 and 0W50 in my 328.
I think unless you live in a country with extremes of temperature, then the oil isn't too critical. The oil pressure in my car is always good, and the oil is regularly changed.

    Cheers

The temp differences between France and Madrid won't be that big, maybe in summer. Madrid temperatures varies from -12º to 45º C through out the year, sure we have more months over 0º C that in nothern Europe, but this is not Africa... yet, nor France is like Finland. France and Spain temperatures (Canary Islands aside) are not that far away.

Yes you are right TWS 10W-60 and the RS 10W-60 are different, however the RS is increasingly more difficult to find, at least around here, while the TWS while hard is easier, and it is still a very close match to the RS. And in some aspects the TWS is better for normal use, the TWS has very high tension and high shear rate which the RS doesn't match.

My experience is that oil presures are more regular no matter the season with the Castrol 10W60 than with the 10W40 oils, that in summer are too thin.

Now, I understand your reasoning and desire to hear form other Ferrari owners with same engine, but that said, your '85 Mondial and my '86 328 engines are not that different. In my opinion you should not discard opinions from other similar Mondials and 328 owners from Central Europe.

    - Julio.

This might be an average recomendation. One too common thing among Ferrari owners is that they do no more tha 6000 miles a year. Oil should be replaced more than just once a year, it degradates just by age and water condensation inside the engine while not running.

I change my oil about twice a year with less miles than that. I basically inspect the oil every week for levels,a t the same time if I found it too dirty then, I change it.

Other consideration is that Audi engines revs up to 6000 rpm, while your car does it to, what 7800 rpm? That affects also the duration of the oil as it does temperature, so it is logical that it last longer on an engine that runs cooler.

As an example, lesser quality oils in a Diesel engine, can last without problems 30000 km, just because the engine runs cooler, so it does the oil.

    - Julio.

Thanks for all comments and from any motors or regions ! I am just trying to find the best choice for that precise car (see this as a pleasant investigation nothing more). :)
