308 Clutch disassembly question

    I am not even sure if it is the clutch. I have no clue about 308s and engines and trannys. My mechanical skills are very much "challenged".
    I have a spare tranny of a 308 and since nobody wanted to buy it now for a while I thought I am going to clean it up and make it a ncie display item, just like the 308 spare engine I have. It will look nice in the new showroom.

    So here I am cleaning it and I get the idea, let me take the round upper housing of and see if it looks nice underneith. The main thing comes off with 6-7 screws. Then there is a ring on one side that has another 6 screws. In order to get the ring of you will need to take the cylinder off, that I believe holds the attachments to the wheels. Please don't laugh. I don't know the english names for these parts. Now that cylinder is held with one screw. I got that out and the cylinder gets lose but does not come off.
    How do I get this thing off?

    Further question:
    The gears can be seen from underneith the gearbox, correct? If that is the case then I guess to display the gearbox best would be upside down by taking off the oilpanhousing, right?

    Verell did a bunch of work on this part of his engine last winter and he will know the answer to your question. Unfortunately, he is on vacation in Germany right now. I'll ask him to take a look at this thread when he gets back.

    Why not crack the box open and take the gears out and put them on display? Sell it piece by piece!

    are you talking about removing the yellow nut and then the round thing is loose but will not come out? If yes this is splined onto the shaft that hold the differential. Nothing looks great in there so forget it, If you want to display it cut the third member open and the top of the box so you can see the guts.

    The cylinder is the inner half-shaft flange. Once the large bolt is out (19mm IIRC) the flange will pull off. It's just stuck now, it's aluminum and gets galled a bit on the steel shaft it rides on.

    You can pull the diff cover off with the flanges still in (providing you took off the ring that holds the seal on the one side). The cover forms the main caps though, so once it's off, the diff wont be held in anymore.

    You have it right with one exception:
    I found that I couldn't get the seal cover ring off w/o pulling the half-shaft flange. Can't remember if the studs for the ring were just a little bit too long, to slip the ring off of them, or if something else was the problem.

    Umm, think the problem was that a couple of the seal cover nuts were seized onto their studs. The studs would back out, but there wasn't enough room to get them out of the ring.

    I think you are correct. I think you still need to have the drive flange off.
