Ok guys, after being lucky enough to own more Ferraris than most, the time has come to start the quest for my dream Ferrari. After seeing one at the Geneva Motor show in 1989, I've always promissed myself an F40! The trouble is they are now realistically an "old" car, and having driven one recently I was to say the least a tad disapointed! But does that really matter? after all its an F40 for christ's sake! I would probably just leave it in the garage and drool over the shape - pure automotive pornography! and never drive it? - can you see my dilema? help me guys I need therapy!!!

If I had that money burning a hole in my back pocket, I'd buy a 430 Spyder, and retire on the change!

What change? If you go mad and order every possible extra you can get a 430 up to about £170k!:D

Why were you disapointed with the F40? Did it feel a bit agricultural? I've not had the pleasure, but I'm sure the performance and driving experience must still be pretty awesome? Driven plenty of Lambo's in anger, would I be disapointed, I'm not sure. Any offers to let me try a F40 for comparison purpose, gratefully accepted ! :D :D

Most of the fun in having goals and ambitions is found in the journey.

Waiting 16 years to get in a car is almost certainly going to be an aticlimax.....the F40 doenst have its status for nothing. While it might be disappointing compared to more modern cars, it is still a complete work of art and every (30-somthing) little boys dream.

I'd do it, and drive it. Just drooling over it would be a waste :D

I have the same dilemma, I'm in this "never meet your heroes" state of mind with the F40. For me, the ultimate Ferrari - I can't help but think I'll be dissapointed

If you were disappointed with an F40, best start looking for an F-14 Tomcat or a Tornado, they're about the only serious competition!:D

I always lusted after a Lotus Esprit since I was 10 years old. Loved them more than Ferrari's. Always wanted one, had them on my bedroom wall, watched the bond movies and any other movies that had them. Would visit Lotus dealers just to look and sit in the car.

Then I drove one. It was crap to drive. Could'nt change gear and did'nt feel anything special.

    So dissapointed!!!

    :(

Sorry guys have to disagree having driven LHD probably more than most Anglaisis, left hand drive is easier and more positive on a race track to drive, its wonderful on roads on the continent, Albert V8 leaves me standing in the overtaking game abroad, since we drive more abroad then it is the one to have, the next car I buy for pleasure is for sure going to be LHD.

The only thing I don't like about the F40 is that they are unique, so rare and once gone, and from what I have heard over 50% have been shunted and quite a few lost now, once gone we have lost that pleasure to see them for ever. And stevef, F50 v F40, no comparison m8, chalk and cheese in my opinion, I would not pay the extra £75k to get an F50 when I could have much better looks and performance from an F40.

Sorry, not only a dogmatice red man I am an F40 man also. F40 then Enzo, there I am. Red Man.

If you really want to see how it goes take it to a good track and drive it hard. Nothing will touch it.

Sorry Dave, don't agree.Icon and stunning car the F40 maybe, unique and rare it is not.Ferrari made over 1300 F40's and was the car that made Ferrari most profit.
Now if you want unique and rare:-
    288 GTO only 272 made
    F50 only 349 made
    stevef's 512,500 made and only 41 RHD
or better still you could have a 348 GTS like mine,1 of only 15 made or a GTB like Angelis,1 of 14 made :D

Don't get me wrong I'd still have an F40 though :D

And only 1 of 2 black ones.

Do you think i could sell it for an extra £10,000

    Guys,
You're all mising the point!..........yes I've always wanted one and yes I'm definately going to get one!.....BUT and it is a big but, I have to enjoy driving the damn thing as well as looking at it, and for me, the one and only time I drove (thanks Tony it really was appreciated) one I thought "what is all the fuss about!" yes it goes like Rip Forster on his way to Mars and It makes THE most glorious noise, I just didn't feel that spending best part of £180k on car that only just does it for me is the way forward!
I may look at several examples and still not make my mind up, as for test drives, they are usually a no no with that calibre car - which isn't a problem as most of the Ferrari's I have bought I never drove untill they were delivered to the house anyway!
Maybe I'm getting confused, and it should be an Austin A40 not a Ferrari F40 I need!

Perhaps others can correct me but I think F40's came in red yellow or black - the most famous UK yellow car was Rod Stewarts I believe - sorry to blow your excuse.....

How long was your test drive? I think that, like many cars in general, but particularly supercars, it would just get better abd better abd you'd soon realise that you'd made agreat decision. Go for it - I'll bet you won't be disappointed:D
