Well I just spent the day replacing my 28 year old brake hoses with a set of goodridge SS hoses that I bought a few years ago from Tire Rack. Well the fronts were a bear to replace but after 7 hrs I finally got all 4 changed. Also with the speedbleeders it was a snap to bleed all of the brakes and do a complete fluid change. So now I'm having a few cold ones to take it easy. The old hoses don't look to bad but I can't see what they look like inside. Not a bad job for a damp cold sunday afternoon. Enjoy the ride

Nice Steve, I did the same on my previous 328GTS and it was a huge improvement in pedal feel. I recently had it done on my 355 and it was still a noticeable improvement. I even did it on a newer BMW (not much difference), but the nice thing is I won't have to worry about the hoses going "soft" in the future. Do your Goodridge lines have the plastic sleeve molded around the SS jacket? They started doing that a year or two ago, as they found in some applications, if you were not careful with the routing, the outer ss jacket could scratch stuff up on the suspension or shocks.

Would you cut the old hoses off and see what they are like on the inside? That will settle some of the controversies.

Put the Goodridge SS hoses on my Mondial QV. They are great. The one's I got did have the plastic sleeve on the outside, over the SS braiding. Similar experience... the rears were a snap to change, the fronts took a while until I figured out how to remove the retaining clip inside the wheel well.

The clip is behind a metal bracket, and it's impossible to get a hand in there to put a plyers on it as is. I ended up using a very thin screwdriver from the side to tap the clip outward a little bit. I then grabbed the clip with a long nosed plyers and pulled it downward from the top corner, and it popped right out. Took an hour on the first side til I figured it out. Two minutes on the other side.

    Steve,
I was thinking of changing all of the brake lines on my Mondial8 this winter and was going to use Goodrige hoses & pipe. I was also thinking of changing the caliper seals, have you done this before & was it difficult?

What type of 'speedbleeder' did you use? Pressure or Vaccuum?

    Regards, Mike

I haven't rebuilt the calipers but if they are like anyother ATE calipers it should be simple. These are no big deal to rebuild. Also the only tough part with the hoses is getting the old ones out. What I did was replace the caliper bleeder nipple with a product called "speedbleeder" . This has a built in check valve so its a snap to bleed each caliper. So all I did was open the bleeder 1/4 turn and go in and pump the brake peddle 8-10 times and go back and close the bleeder (need to make sure there is a rubber hose on the bleeder into a bottle). Then go back and pump the brake and the peddle gets hard. I did this on each wheel as I replaced each hose. Other then dirty hands it is a straight forward job. Enjoy the ride

    Steve,

This sounds like a hot item. Where did you get it and how much. Sounds like a no brainer.

    chris

I did the hoses while i was doing the suspension bushing replacement. much MUCH easier with the spring/shock & A arms out of the way.

    hth,
    chris

Hoping someone can help me with this one - I can't find SS brake lines available anywhere for my '88 ABS equipped Mondial 3.2. The Goodrich lines sound like a quality part so I'd love to get some of those. Anyone have a line on a source for these for my particular model? Thanks in advance.

I bought my set (euro 308 QV) from Stevson Motors- also in the UK, Birmingham.
    Cost about $80 US delivered.

I just called to pay, after emailing a few times. No problems.

I was going to go with Demon Tweeks on the suggestion of this board, but they would not sell them without a sample front and rear brake line. I didn't want to be off the road that long, so I looked around and found Stevson motors.

This is all great info and very timely since I am getting ready to flush my brake fluid and want to replace the flex lines at the same time (with SS if possible) and rebuild the calipers.

BUT.... what are the specs of the speedbleeders (part number? thread size? length?) AND does anybody have an idea if the bleeder sizes for the 3x8 ATE calipers are the same as the ATE calipers used on the 400i?

    Thanks,
    Al

Are SS brake hoses street legal? ... I didn't think they were, ie. for racing only.

They definitely are easy to snap (at the ends), so be careful when working near them.

Could be wrong about the street legal issue.

Some are, but certain manufacturers have received DOT approval. I believe Goodridge was the first company to do so along with EARL'S.

Obviously ask or check first, but most all the brands I see: Goodridge, StopTech, etc, all have the proper DOT approvals (and TUV for europe).

    Hugh G,

I just had to do your name on EBAY---what i saw would just take your breath away - you stallion!!

Seriously, good call on the speedbleeder google deal.

    with malice aforethought,
    chris

    Hugh G.,

I hate to sound like a big silly dummy, but they didn't list ferrari in their size index and i know you are a size orriented guy, so you might be able to tell me what size the 308 bleeder screw size. Gosh!!, i know that sounds crude, but i am too lazy to go out to remove one to check the size and thread pitch, can you help me out here old buddy?

    Just mystified, beyond belief

Thanks for the info/links. Upon review it looks like these manufacturers don't provide a SS kit for the '88 ABS equipped Mondial - they seem to go up to 1987 and skip to the 1990 Mondial T as the next available kit.

Does anyone have SS brake lines on an '88 ABS equipped mondial? Thanks in advance for any help.

Call the speedbleeder folks and tell them you want it for a 308 and they will tell you and give you the right size. They know

Here is the note I placed back in May

OK folks just a little info if you want it. I just installed speedbleeders on my 77 308 GTB and it took 2 hours green to green to do the job. I would assume that all 308's with ATE calipers use the same speedbleeders if you want to buy them. So the pat number fro the FRONTs is SB8125LL (8mm x 1.25 ) and the part number for the REARs is SB7100 (7mm x 1.0) . This was a simple job and they work good in flushing the system by your self. Just thought you would like to know. Their web site is www.speedbleeder.com or you can get them on 815 736-6296 Enjoy the ride

There are ADR approved manufacturers now. I use a company that make them to my order. They're only about $300AUD for 4, and they have plastic coating to prevent abrasion, ADR approval labelling and are infinitely better than the rubber ones. (they often bleed themselves under gravity during installation as flow is so much better)

The only small annoyance is that the internal taper seat angle is slightly different, meaning that you "may" have to replace the metal hard lines at each end of the flexi if they wont seal... On the 10 or so sets I've fitted in the last 2 years, I think on average 1 or 2 pipes per car need to be replaced. (the older the car, the more likely to need it.) I make these myself as I carry stock of hard line and pipe nuts.

It's usually when the car has seen excessive maintenance.. ie the calliper pipes get overtightened/repeatedly tightened by "enthusiastic" mechanics, which damages the flare. Usually, the inboard line is ok, just the outer gets abused during disc changing etc.

All cars benefit from having them. They should be std fitment, I think.
