I needed a bearing for my Dino gearbox.

I hopped on Ferrari UK, and ouch, 370 GBP +-

So, off to Dennis McCann's website $510 USD Double Ouch.

Off to the mechanic. grab a caliper, measure the bearing, get the bearing # off the original. It's RIV - bought out by SKF in the 80's, so no luck there.

Finally spend some time on the SKF site, searching for the right bearing, get a number, call my bearing supplier, have him check to make sure it's what I want and.....................

    $81.50 USD.

I dunno, I was more than willing to spring the $500+ until I did some digging, thinking, "I've never seen a $500 bearing, it must be something really special."

Nope, just a good old high speed, high load roller bearing.

I guess we pay for their expertise in looking the bearing up on a chart, right?

What is your billable rate Dave? Maybe you just spent the $500 and don't even know it. :)

    hmmmmmmmm................

took me about 15 minutes, total. So, it's close, but I'm still ahead.

And I learned a valuable lesson. In the words of my pal Ronald Reagan, "Trust, but verify."

Applied to the Soviets, applies to Ferrari parts guys too.

Si. Esta bueno. But with a steady influx of German parts, it will someday become a Porsche.

BTW, SKF has a plant 3 blocks away from my office in Shanghai. I pass it every day on the way to Spicy's office.

Well that's ok, 'cause it already isn't a Ferrari.

    It's "almost a Ferrari"

It has Lucas fans motors, Pirelli belts, Michelin tires, some funky French headlights, German bearings (at least the replacement one is, the rest are RIV which are Italian) British leather and carpets and Chinese tools, so how much of the car is Ferrari anyway.

    Hi,

Please provide the exact SKF reference as I can only find NU 2208 ECJ or ECML or ECP. ECML seems to have a much higher speed limit, 16000 rpm, whereas the other 2 are safe to 11000 rpm.

    Cheers,
    Tryfon
