There was some discussion rcently about BB clutches.

I thought I'd share pictures of one I (sub contractor) rebuilt to my specs.

It's a ceramic button heavy duty/competition, rebuilt on a worn out std clutch.

    It's advantages are....

that it's much cheaper than a std clutch kit,
    it's lighter,
less prone to "flywheel crack inducing" hot spots
will not fly apart at high rpm,
will not absorb oil from surrounding leaks,
    indestructable... pretty much anyway.
less pedal effort AND higher clamp load, with same pedal travel.. YES!!

it's only disadvantages are that it "might" try to judder if you crawl away at under 1200rpm, over that, it's just as smooth as normal.

and it will wear the flywheel ever so slightly more than std.... maybe 20% flywheel life reduction at worst case estimate. But I haven't had to change a flywheel yet, in fact I've never changed a std one due to wear (only cracks)either......

I'm sure there are clutch rebuilders in all countries, and you're welcome to use these photo's to get them done locally.

Phil looks like a good job - how much cheaper is it than buying stock?

well, i just fitted this one, including replacing all the exhaust fastenings for new, all the labour (about 14.5 hrs), topping up the gear oil, attending to leaking oil seals in the area, replacing the spigot bearing (but not the release brg as it was like new) , rebuilding the slave cylinder and some issues with the air box bellows and mounts etc (BBi)... for less than it would have cost to buy the clutch kit genuine... and I was quoted 6 weeks delivery by my local dealer,

I was also quoted AUD$4500 for a 348 twin plate clutch... and I've just done the same to that car, although I built that one to exactly std original spec.

Boxer clutches are not that expensive anyway. I had the clutch on my BB512i replaced in Dec 2002 for $1950.00 parts and labor and 8,000klms later it is still working fine.
