    Why is it that everytime you see pictures from California half the cars either have trade plates or no plates?
    Do they have special rules that let quality cars drive without plates?

    Firstly, front plates are not compulsary in California. Secondly, when you buy a new car there, you simply stick a piece of paper inside your windscreen (registration info) until your plates arrive, typically 60 - 90 days later.

    Presumably because half the cars are facing forwards and half backwards. In the US you don't need a front plate in every state. Not sure about California specifically.

    A lot of dealers (of the car variety) also participate in these driveouts so they obviously have trade plates :)

    There is a LOT more dealer interaction with the clubs over there than in the UK :)
