Guys I'm having a problem on the 3rd / 4th gear on my 6-speed 360 coupe and I need your wisdom here....

My car seems to be going VERY SLOW during hard acceleration on 3rd / 4th gear from 6500~8500 RPM, the RPM / Speedometer seems to move extremely slow while the engine was very loud, I can notice the car is lagging and his happens occasionally.

Per my observation, my 3rd gear goes up to 100mph and the 4th ends at approximately 125mph.

    This problem does not exist on 1st / 2nd gear, only on 3rd / 4th. I didn't have a chance to test the car on 5th / 6th gear at 6500~8500 RPM...

I first thought it was the clutch wear, then it couldn't because my clutch is not slipping. Just the speedometer / RPM is moving up VERY slow.

Could this be an electrical problem of some sort? Any 360 owners has experience the same?

    Anything would help! Thank you!

Car isn't making horsepower. I bet the symptoms are more profound in 5th, 6th.

Take it in, get it checked. Problems don't get cheaper with time.

Thanks, and what is your assumption? Engine? Electrical Problem? Oil?

and why it does not happen on 1st/2nd? Thank you.

Unless your brakes are stuck on it is either compression, fuel or ignition. Can't guess farther than that, I left my cristal ball at home.

It doesnt happen in 1st, 2nd because with the gearing you can accelerate that car with 100 HP. Top gears are Always where you notice HP loss first

LOL! Fresh plugs solve 6.5 of 10 problems on the older carbed cars!

    Your actual results, may vary..........

Slamming the garage door closed solves 2 of the remaining 3.5.......

Engine gets super LOUD as you get no acceleration under full throttle?!

MMMmmm, methinks ya got an exhaust leak either through your exhaust valves or through your exhaust manifold (or both).

Could be a timing issue causing the exhaust valves to be off...could be damaged valve/cam/manifold/cat/muffler components...could be lifters sticking (perhaps even something as simple as dirty oil).

Can you hear any tap, tap tapping coming from back there at idle?

Yes, sometimes... all I did for that is to take to car out and to some quick runs from 0~140mph for about a couple times and the tapping sound goes away....

    thoughts? thanks.

ok.. now the lagging is happening at all gears... but sometimes it works fine (like 1/15 times accelerating)... this is getting very strange..

    Methinks you are right.

I would lean towards a valve issue.

Top end rebuild. Any takers on the action? 8:5 odds.

First time I've heard of this problem. Would be prudent to stop driving it and get it checked ASAP!

Please keep us posted on the results.

It is NOT the first time I have heard of it and it is not even all that uncommon a set of symptoms. But it is not smart to keep driving.

Not very specific. Why don't you just say it is something under the hood.

And I'll help you out, It ain't a header leak.

Good. If your car is under warranty it will get fixed for free. If not it will get fixed cheaper than ignoring the problem in the hope it will go away or playing the internet guessing game while something very expensive was (maybe) in the making.

Then I'm probably wrong. You're the pro. I'm the dilletante. But the guy hears tap, tap, tapping...his engine gets LOUD but produces no power when he floors the throttle...and his problem keeps getting worse.

So if it's not his valves or his timing then I'll at least get to learn something out of this thread.

    In many cases , great.

In this one the symptoms suggest several scenarios that to continue to ignore and to play the guessing game while delaying real diagnostics could lead to very expensive, serious trouble. Knowing that and to continue to play the game would be very irresponsible on my part.

As much as I would like to be part of it and diagnose it, it just isn't wise. His car has a pain in the chest, might just be indegestion but we don't know and the only prudent thing to do is to go to the hospital.
