    Hi all,

    Recently med a really great guy from the UK (Martin). Since we both live in Tejas now, where bier is not of the widest selection, I got to wondering. I haven't been drinking much bier lately. However, I am a bier guy. I love German biers from Bavaria and Belgium. Real Biers. Some are exported over here, but then they are ruined by US processing requirements.

    So what are the great biers both in the UK and exports from the UK, that someone should try if they get the chance?

    I was going to post this in the UK forum, but thought that it's more applicable here because alot of the UK guys would not necessarily know what makes it over here, especially available in Tejas.

    I really like Harp, but would that be Irish?

    While not UK, I do like a GE bier, Warstiener.

    Again, while not UK, I have really grown fond of Kingfisher (Indian).

    There are many fine beers in the Samuel Smith's line, especially the Oatmeal Stout. Young's Double Chocolate Stout is another of my favorites. Check out www.beeradvocate.com for many other reviews, which can be separated out by regions of production.

    New Castle is one of my favorites. But only from the tap it's always skunky tasting from the bottle.

    Harp is good, but yes, not from the UK, Warstiener is ok in the US (you need the real thing in Germany!). Never seen Kingfisher, but I'd try it for the experience. What type of bier is Kingfisher?

    I completely forgot about beeradvocate.com. If I can find the time, I'll have to brew some more bier myself. Sam Smiths is good (at least what I've had).

    aawil, I've had a few New Castles that were good. They aren't always skunky. I haven't had any here in Tejas. Last time was in NH.

    Hmmm...where to begin...

    Whitbread
    Workie Ticket (fantastic x 10)
    George Gale's Prize Old Ale
    JW Lee's Harvest Ale (I still have a 1986 vintage unopened bottle in the cellar; it's a barley wine so it's still good ;))
    Newcastle isn't bad
    Harp is okay
    Boddingtons isn't bad


    There are a LOT of great beers from the British Isles, but it's tough to narrow it down. I could go on and on ad nauseum, but as there aren't that many easily available in the US market (w/o special ordering them) why bother. :D

    a real nice IPA. Its hoppy but doesn't hit you over the head like most IPAs. Try it in a frosted glass, great aroma....Oh Man, getting thirsty thinking about it.

    Actually Kingfisher is a lager. I'm not sure if the stuff we get here in the U.S. is brewed in India, either. Last time I checked, the Kingfisher available in the U.S. was brewed in England under license from United Breweries of India. In addition to India and the U.K., I believe that Kingfisher is also brewed in New Zealand. There is a Kingfisher website... www.kingfisherworld.com

    HA! You are right indeed sir, it is a lager.

    A closer inspection of the bottle (empty of course) reveals this on the back label: "...brewed under the technical supervision of the United Breweries Limited, Bangalore, India".; however, the front says "Brewed and Bottled by Kingfisher Brewing Co., Saratoga Springs, NY.
    NEW YORK!!! WTF!

    Some of the best UK beers to be tasted are:-

    1.Old Speckled Hen
    2.IPA
    3.GBH (there is a good reason for its name:))
    4.Tanglefoot
    5.Dragons Breath
    6.Bishops Finger
    7.Newquay Steam

    Some of the Cornish Beers brewed at St.Austell Brewery are brilliant:-
    1.HSD
    2.Tinners
    3.probably the best of all Tribute.
    Did have a cupboard full of the buggers, but hey, they were taking up valuable space:)

    Great lists. I have seen Old Speckled Hen, but the other's aren't ringing a bell. I guess I'll have to go hunting sometime. :)

    Anyone here heard of Stingo? (I think it was from Watney's?) My favorite beer back in college, but I've not seen it in years and years...
