just as predicted the first time this happened,
it wasn't just a problem with my cat. so now i need to
troubleshoot fuel injection and ignition. I know plenty of other
people with 348s have seen this issue.

I did search and saw some MAFS and bad O2 sensor comments.

I'll pull the codes on the ECU tonight but meanwhile would like to know
what experience others had with this.

I am assuming the car is running too rich on the left bank.
so maybe a bad MAFS or bad spark plug wires or bad ignition?

Cats never overheat by themselves. They cannot create a problem they can only respond to one.

It is not a sign that the car is running too rich, it is a sign that too many hydrocarbons are going downstream from the motor. Running rich is one of many reasons for that.

Thanks Rifledriver. While I realize that thre may be many reasons for this to happen, I wanted to get a good idea of the most likely cause.
For example, several people on the list had problems with their MAFS. Also, spark plug wires seem to go bad. Injectors might get clogged from put-putting around in traffic. I just wanted to see if other 348 owners had this happen and what the cause for their problem was. this would be something I'd have to look into as well.

Shortcutting the diagnosis of a running problem absent of any other information will only lead to frustration and needless expense. Start at the begining.

There is, likely, some unusually high amount of unburnt fuel getting to the cat and this phenomenon is going to be the factor that elevates core temps to the 1,000+ degree level, well above the normal operating temp of the cat (typically between 450 and 600 degrees). So, you need to find out the source of the unburnt fuel. As suggested earlier in the thread, look for the obvious culprits - bad plug wires, overly rich mixture (MAS problem, for example), bad cap/rotor, etc.

Did you ever get the rear end of your car fixed after the last rear ending ?

Did you get the body work done in Tijuana like the first time ?

Does your car still have a salvage title ?

    zeutzius,

pretty offensive post, do I know you? what did I do to piss you off?
    Your facts are all wrong.

-my car does not have a salvage title.

-repair work was not done in TJ

please refrain from posting obvious falsehoods on this board
if you dont know what you are talking about. this is
borderline slander. I thought i asked a technical question.

    Okay back to the topic.

In your search did you find the thread I posted about a year ago asking about MAFS. There is an adjustment screw on them. Make sure that you are getting the correct readings. In case you didn't here is the thread. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20378&highlight=Mass+Air+Flow+adjustment

You may also want to have a look at the connection on the rear cam sensor. Make sure everything checks out fine on it.

Something like this is pretty tough to nail down. You could go get an exhaust test done. Each cylinder has a port on the exhaust header that can be opened, and the exhaust gasses tested. This will tell you exactly what each cylinder is doing, and can point you in the right direction.

I feel your pain bro. I had a misfire that bugged my for several months. It finally turned out to be one stupid little wire that was busted.

Ernie thanks. Yes I did see your post and will investigate the MAFS.
Will probably need to run an engine diagnostics and go from there.
do you know if Tillack in Redondo beach has equipment to do this?

That I don't. But I do know that Michael, at Ferrari Service of Costa Mesa, does.

Take your car to a shop with a 4 gas annalyzer. Take all reading BEFORE the cats on each side of the engine and compair results. After you have this info you will be better equiped to trouble shoot your problem.

    Renier,

Yes, don't you remember ? We met down at the beach.
Sorry, I thought the repair work was done in TJ. I could of swore that's what you said.
Was it done locally ? I'd like to know so I can take my 308 there.

    Sorry for any confusion.
