2500 a year? They pumped out almost 8,000 in 4 months?!?!

The 964 and 993 turbos were completely hand made. They took around 8 days to make each. Even under these conditions they made more than 2,500/year. The 996tt has it's own assembly line. They make one car in under 8 hours. They make alot of them dude ;) I literally see at least 1.5 of them a day.

If you read the quote from Auto.com carefully, you'll note they claim total 4 month sales of Porsches through Nov. 2002 was 14,615. While 4 months sales of the "911 Turbo" was 7954. Doesn't it strike you as odd that over half of Porsche's *total* production was the 911 Turbo? What about base 911's and Boxsters? Might I suggest that this article erroneously substituted "911 Turbo" for "911"? Then this would make sense, i.e. 54% was 911's and the rest was Boxsters?

In fact, from the 2003/04 Porsche annual report, they show the following annual production volumes of all 911's WW:

    1999/00 2000/01 2001/02 2002/03 2003/04
    23,050 26,721 32,337 27,789 23,704

I was actually a bit optimistic as they apparently only exceeded 30,000/year of 911's for 1 year.

Now from the American International Auto Dealer's website, they have the following sales breakdown for 911's in the US for December 2004 (and also 2003, since that is the "prior year"):

    http://www.aiada.org/article.asp?id=30666&cat=Industry

Note that there were 1866 Turbo coupe/cabs out of 9408 911's in the prior year, and there were 1788 Turbo S/coupe/cabs out of 9654 911's in the current year.

These numbers were a bit higher than I thought, but still show that just 20% of all 911's shipped into the US were turbo's of some kind. Also that US sales represent 30-40% of Porsche's WW sales. For the recent 2 years, US turbo units were 3654, so 3 earlier years of 1500-2000 units per year would add up to 8000-9000 US turbo units between 1999 and 2004.

Oh, yeah, in regards to the original question - I would pick a 993TT over a 996TT at this point.

I don't have any issues with picking a 993TT, I drove a couple myself. I just wanted to point out the virtues of the 996TT and that they are FAR from "mass produced". Still waiting to see another one on the road after over two months of ownership driving 100+ miles per day in a city of 4 million (mostly aholes tailgating in pickup trucks).

Kinda sucks since I want to buy an aftermarket exhaust and hear a few choices live.

Obviously you don't live in LA. I live 6 blocks from my office and see no less then 2-6 996TTs p/day! Once again, Porsche has produced too many cars. Not convienced? Contact your dealer or bank and check the residual value of your car. When it comes to bulletproof reliability and F-car like resale its about 993TT.

996 turbos came out in 2001. So its 4 years, plus whatever is left in the production run.

Right, thanks for the correction - the 996 was intro'd around 1999 and the 996TT came out a couple of years later.
