Really? They go faster than that? I know they have an awesome acceleration, but dunno what their top speed is.

It always bothered me because I knew a F1 is faster than a CART on an oval, but it just isn't tuned to speed alone because it also turns right. This should settle the matter once and for all.

My request to BAR: Can we now please proof the "myth" of a F1 being capable of driving upside down? Pleeeeaaaazzzeeee. :)

I think they hit 300 mph+ speeds at the end of the quarter mile.

Top fuel's record is 333mph IIRC, by the US Army team-Tony Schumacher-maybe(?). Although I love F1, pretty much everything is a toy compared to the the top fuelers, they really are unGodly.

edit, and keep in mind, that's 333mph at the end of a quarter, not some staged event on Bonneville, etc. It's their top speed in a race...

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the Montreal circuit the same for F1 and CART ? And aren't the CART times at least about 4 or 5 secs off the F1 times ?

I think I read in the past the fastest CART car is slower than the slowest Minardi by a good bit.

Their point was not based on lap times, but top speed reached in the ovals.

thats one of the reasons I miss the Mulsanne Straight WITHOUT chicanes. Yes, yes, I know its safer now, but there was just something about cars going FLAT OUT...

Oh I knew that. Perhaps they should have rephrased it as fastest race cars in the world to run on ovals that have been setup to only run on ovals :)

I'd like to see an F1 car setup for ovals but with BS tires :)

It says they did 415 Km with F1 spec wings. Do you think they will use a different areo package during Bonneville? I would think with a different areo package it should do like 290 mph, maybe 300 mph.

    That's 265 mph. Pretty dog-on fast.

I wonder what a top fueler could max out at??

They may not match the speeds they got when they go to Bonneville due to the salt surface. The Mojave airport runs were on tarmac. Better grip and much smoother.

And also if they can't get the right conditions to run in Utah until next May or June, shouldn't they run the car with a V8 ?

I don't think that would make much of a difference. By then the V8 will have gained back a lot of hp ground. Also that V8 will be a qualifying engine built to last less than an hour. If anything the car might be even slicker because of the smaller engine.

That's a little overly optimistic I think. They won't claw back the 200 bhp lost next year or if ever IMHO. That's a lot of power to lose and they're working with 2 less cyls.

I believe current valve train technology is the limiting factor in getting the rpm's much beyond 20k+ rpms reliably.

Ya wonder if the GPMA ever gets off the ground will they use 10's or 8's ?
