I read this as well, and posted about it in the other marriage thread of the day.

These women have no hope where they are, so they take a chance. On the plus side for the women, pre-nuptial agreements they enter into are routinely tossed by courts and they do get to come to America with the head start money of their soon to be ex-husbands assets. Many of these women have children out of wedlock they forget to mention until they arrive to America and insist the new hubby take in as well. Why does one need to go abroad to find a wife? The concept of a traditional wife is long gone, regardless of locale. "Eddie, I want half Eddie!"

Some of the weddings are mob set ups where the Russian women are owned by the Russian mafia. The new bride's job is to sift through the husband's finacials while he is at work to give her bosses his account numbers and vital assets for identity theft purposes.

 

Interesting thread. I strongly suspect/believe that one of my college roomates got himself a mail-order bride (She is from Japan). Didn't really know he was dating anybody, suddenly he is engated to this woman. They've been married now for a few years, and have 2 kids. They do seem to have a wierd relationship, he is the dominant one, and she is very submissive. Your quote above could be a good descrption of him. He was the guy that would get pranked on all of the time.

I don't know for sure if his wife was a mail order bride, but I really think she is. It just all fits together.

 

I dont see it really any different than the olden days of when you were set up by family members. The major difference is you can trust the people setting it abit more. Still a messed situation, either way. Dont know why a man in the west would consider this option.

 

My accountant up until 97, ordered himself one of them russian ones, got married and two weeks later BAM!! he was dead of a heart attack.

Don't know if it was her or his bad health, but it really screwed up my books for a few years!

 

I've met a couple that married that way. He's sort of short, but a nice guy, she's a knockout. Tall, blonde, built. They've been together a while, maybe they're one of the success stories?

Actually I used a shop here in Houston once for Safety Inspection, and in the guy's office (run of the mill place) was this pic of a knock out.......he caught me looking and showed the baby pics..she was a Russian student here at UoH.....he was going to sell all, and return with her (she was Radio/Film/TV grad) and it so impressed her, she stayed here....
