What's with these crack smoking bozo's? Attacking a luxury liner in a 15 foot boat with guns and one RPG laucher? That's like me trying to punch out a WalMart! I can see them goung after a 75-100 foot personal craft, but a 10,000 ton ship? I think it would be fun if the large ships had a 30mm gun on each side of the brige to teach these wingnuts a quick lesson!

...BUT, if media attention was their goal, they certainly achieved it.

There was a news report and I cannot remember the name of the vessel for the life of me, but pirates thought they would take this one on. The pirates ended up having a bad day, for they attacked a US Navy boat. Sailors swung those .50's on them and opened up causing one of the pirates fast boats to explode. :D

The ship was carrying a fleet of people that were heading over to collect their million dollar inheritances from various banks in Africa. I got an email saying that I had a few billion dollars coming to me, but I couldn't get off of work to take the cruise.

The article I read said the pirates were riding aboard 12-foot inflatable boats. So where was the obligatory cruise-ship brat packing his sling shot?

Either that or they should have given them the 'ol Dave Matthews baptism.

One of the photos is of a long boat. Wooden hull.

I must admit I am a little surprised that there was not a pistol at least on that ship.

I was an officer in the US Navy and later 3rd, 2nd and eventually got my Chief Engineers license on deep-draft ocean-going Merchant ships. Sailed mostly tankers for the Kuwaiti's back in the late 80s.

We got zapped by Pirates many times. Both the west and East Coast of Africa were really bad as they are not against comming onboard with Machine Guns and killing an entire crew.

The place we got hit the most were near Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and the Phillipines. There they are mostly fisherman suplementing their income and were usually armed with just a machetti or big fish chopping knives.

Not much you can do except give cash, soap, food radios and whatever else they wanted.

The insurance companies refused to even acknowledge that their was a problem and insisted that the word piracy not be used as this would raise insurance values. The offical term was "armed, univited intruders." Go figure.

    Cheers,

    Bill Noon

That rules out the slingshot. $hitshower would probably still be effective. Were you able to find any pictures showing the damage? Curious what an RPG would do to a ship hull.

Hey Bill, I'm curious, how does a guy armed with nothing but a machete forcefully board something like a tanker?

Kinda busy but in short...your average ULCC (Ultra Large Crude Carrier) is sporting 300+ meters in length, 70+ meter beam and 30+meter draft. Crew is usually 28-30 with 1/2 asleep at anyone time, one person on the bridge sometimes two and one or two in the engineroom. They usually come up behind you at night and sling a small line with a hook over the rail to the port or stabaord of the transom. Then send up a skinny to haul up a pilot lader.

Most of the time then never even woke anyone up and most of never new they were aboard as rarely was an alarm ever rung.

After awhile my guys rigged up some fire hoses and we ran a stream of high pressure water full time spraying in a patern all the way around the stern of the ship. This kept most at bay as the water pressure is 100lbs and shoots 30 to 50 meters out.

Of of Nigeria we signalled to take abourd the local pilot on a greek frieghter I was sailing on and when the pilot came aboard we found out he was really a pirate and had taken over the pilot boat. The African pirates usually took cigarettes, alcohol, soap, food and whatever cash they could get. They were always well armed so we never argued which is probably why I can write and tell about it today.

    Cheers,

    Bill
