I got a used oven from a firm of kitchen fitters (one they'd taken out) works perfectly for doing wrinkle paint.....just need to get a used dishwasher for parts next ;)

My plenum paint is flaking and I thought, wait a minute, instead of going through the hassle or removing it or trying to paint it on the engine; how would it look plain, not painted at all?
Has anyone else tried that? I'm going to try it and post some pics.

I did that when my paint started flaking. All the 2V inj 308's were unpainted so to see what it would look like just find one of those

If you saw a black one, someone else painted it. The 2V inj intakes were unpainted from the factory and had a different surface design then the 4V

I just wrinkel painted the airbox using a tack coat, followed by heavy coat and 200 degree oven. (VHT from autozone) Came out great. I also attempted to remove the air intake and fix the flaking and got all but 2 retainer nuts off before I gave up. The nuts (on the air plenum) rest up against the casting so a wrench only fits on part way and then only turns about 1/64th of a rev before you have to flip the wrench. Worried on the two which are very tight that I will strip the nut. Anyone have a recommendation?

Are you telling me that you have not seen a factory black plenum on any of the 2-valve injected cars?

    I sure have.

wondered how much of a PITA it was to remove. There's 328 paint it on the engine thread with pics. I was going to try that until I entertained thoughts of leaving it stripped off to see how it looks. I'm going to try that and post pics and see what feedback I get.

As far as I know the early (1980) 2V engines had a silver uncoated plenum, and that's what I have. I believe the changeover to a factory black painted plenum occured sometime during 1981.

The 1980 early 2V cars also have some other odd quirks compared to the 1981-82 cars - I have dual fuel filters side by side, as one example.

But I digress - Here's how the silver plenum looks. I simply removed mine, cleaned it, and painted it with some high temp silver rattle can paint. I prefer this look to the later balck painted ones.

    Cheers - DM

thnx for the pic Dave. A short while ago I had a different idea for my plenum. Don't think I've seen anyone else mention the way I'm considering or seeing any pic. I'll try it out and post some pics.

Where and when? I have never seen one and all the ones that I looked at when they were new and in the literature during that time were all unpainted. So based on that I assumed that is how Ferrari produced them. How are you certain the black ones you saw left the factory that way? I am not trying to imply you haven't ever seen black ones, just that it is unlikely Ferrari actually painted them.

You know you guys really have me thinking about this now. I swear for the life of me I cannot remember those 2V's ever being black even in 81-82. I have tons of old pictures I took back in those years of 2V cars. I'll dig them up and see what they look like and I'll check my (huge) stack of magazines on 308's too.

Well, I just pulled some old pictures I took in 82 and 83 of 2V cars and I'll be damned if the intake isn't black. The 80 models WERE unpainted and for some reason the best engine shots I have were from two 80 models and so that is just what has stuck in my mind for the past 20+ years. I can't believe I never noticed it in the other pictures of the 81 and 82 models and I have had these things since grade school. Even worse I can't understand why I have never noticed this on the cars I have looked at in the past 5 years.

    Oh well, I stand corrected.
