Well - I finally scored the elusive Exoto 312T2 (N. Lauda) off eBay. I didn't think I was *ever* going to find one. At least my collection of Exoto Ferraris is complete, i.e. I have one of each model that they produced. I considered going all out and getting every driver as well, but I think there's many other models to pursue. Additionally, the prices on Exotos only seem to be getting higher (paid $280 for this one) as they become harder to find, so spending big $$$ on models that I essentially already "have" (at least, in the wife's eyes) isn't wise.

Now if that CMC 250SWB would hurry up, I'll be content!!!

Congratulations! You should post some pics. Please.

I have long given up on getting all the drivers. One car per year is hard enough. To give myself a bit of an extra challenge, I'm trying to have different drivers every year. Not easy when you look at the consistency of the team since 95, but I manage with the test drivers. :)

Definitely will post pics when I receive the model... I too was trying to do different drivers, but I will end up with two Niki Lauda cars - the T2 and the T. My 312B is Andretti, and my T4 is Villeneuve (USGP east...the "umbrella" car). I could've purchased Regazzoni instead of Lauda on this T2, but I figured in the long run, Lauda was the car to have (even though Regazzoni finished 2nd at the GP of Italy).

    :(

The argument could go either way: Lauda is the more famous driver so it is the car to have. OTOH probably less people bought the Rega car for that reason so eventually it will become the more rare car.

I realize I'm not mainstream here, but I made always a point NOT to buy the Schumacher cars. I have one Schumacher car only. I might get a second one just because he changed his helmet design.

Excellent point - I had the same feelings... When it comes right down to it, though - I buy my models for me. Selecting one over another because someone else might find it more value would take some of the fun out of it (even though I'm guilty of having done that), I think. When it comes time to buy the Minichamps stuff, I'll definitely be picking up one of each driver - Irvine, Berger, Alesi - must haves for any collection!

True, I'm not collecting for $$$, but for myself, which is why I throw the boxes away etc.

How about a Larini, Salo and Gene?

I once read somewhere (I think in a magazine) that as soon as someone says that a car is destined to become a collectible, its potential collectibility goes out the window. On that note, I guess I should start buying up all the Dino 308GT4s I can, as nobody ever said that about them!!! ;)

If I come across 'em, I'll definitely pick them up! They probably won't be the first ones I seek out, but in time, I imagine I'll find them.

Larini I bought stock (no driver figure though).
Salo I made myself by buying a Salo car (I believe it was a Sauber) and then transplanting the driver's head.
Gene I did from scratch by repainting a helmet. Couldn't find a Gene car at all.

I also hand painted Badoer and Giovanardi and will do Rossi. Massa you can of course use another Sauber as well or just wait for next year. Burti also is available for head transplant. :)

Hmm, maybe I should post a few more pics myself.

    Andreas,
The fourth pic shows the high nose launch car. Did you do the Marlboro conversion or did you buy it that way? I don't believe I've ever seen that car without the bar-code stripes.
The driver conversions are great. I didn't realize that there were so many.
    Nice job on those.

Exoto seems to "retire" certain versions of a car, only to produce other versions at a later date. Considering how short a period of time the 312T2 was available (and, if I recall, with no driver figures), I would guess that it will reappear, this time probably with drivers.

But I am disappointed that to this date they have not issued any version of the 641/2 with a driver figure who's just sitting in the car, with both hands on the wheel, and with no "accessories" like monitors or umbrellas. All the other Exoto Ferraris I have came like this, so why not the 641/2? I have written them repeatedly on this matter, with no response.

Hotwheels seems to be falling into the same patter with their Schumacher cars - it seems like he's either standing up in the car, standing on the car, standing next to the car, or pumping his fist in the air.

Thanks, I'm trying hard not to end up with all Barrichello/Schumacher cars.

I did all the Marlboro conversions myself, some more accurate than others. After a while I got tired of chasing down the right set of decals for a particular year. It is such a silly game that these models are not produced in the correct livery. Anyway.

Well, look what you have done with this thread: I just bought a Minichamps 412 T2 on Ebay...;-)

It's my first F1 in 1:18 outside of Exoto. I'm going to stick with the Minichamps (no Onyx or Mattell for me) and just the ones I like (F93A, 412T2 and F310B).

It's the Schumacher introduction version (1995) and MIB. Bought it for 60 euro including p&p. Seemed not very much compared to other auctions on Ebay.

As for the Exoto 312 T2 I was playing with the idea of buying a second one and converting the ducts to the later version (smaller). But now that I've seen the prices of the T2 I'm not going to do it.

Hehe. Tu quoque mi fili Brute!

Since this thread started I have ventured onto ebay and won the long lost T2 (Rega) and the 81 Villeneuve car. Loza dough though. Now I'm hoping and waiting that I'll eventually get the models.

Next on the shopping list are the 1/18 05 Ferrari (Rossi) and the 1/18 05 Sauber (Villeneuve).

Since you folks are so serious about collecting 1:18 F1 cars, perhaps you can offer some advice....

I will soon be in the throes of finishing off a game room which will have a very serious racing/Ferrari theme. This will be an "extreme" room, though not of the big $$$ variety - just overkill on the theme.

Part of the design will be a racetrack - on the ceiling - leading from one door into the room, to the other door which exits the room. Overall length will probably be 30 feet or so (give or take a few feet...). I want to suspend my 1:18 F1 cars (as well as some non-F1s) on that track, but don't know how to go about it. Ideally, I'd like a small metal prong which has threads on one end (to thread into the chassis holes that hold it on its original base), and barbs on the other end so I could just push it into the sheetrock. Don't know that this would really *work*, but seems to be the most elegant, least visible solution. Of course, I doubt I'll ever find such a piece....

Which brings me back to my original question - any clever ideas on how to suspend 1:18 models from a ceiling???? Preferably with little, if anything, visible (i.e. "no visible means of support"!). ;-)

    Thanks!

    What a cool idea!

For simplicity's sake I would mount them onto a track lane, which is a cut metal sheet. First mount the cars on that sheet while working on it on your workbank. Once finished hang the track plate onto your ceiling. Would only need a few hooks with sinkers into the ceiling.

The cars I would mount (as you suggested) using their original screw holes from their package.

That *is* a cool idea - and one which will get some serious thought. But it does pose other problems.... Not insurmountable, but if I had a clever way to attach the cars to the ceiling, painting the track up there would be way easier. But still a neat idea....

    Thanks!

    Not insurmountable, but mountable...
    :)

Seriously also consider maintenance. If you ever want to change the arrangement, have additional/different cars etc, it is easier if things are "modular".

I haven't done what you're planning, but I have built some crazy Ferrari things around my house and one of the biggest lessons learned is: Service and maintenance, the stuff has to be able to be disassembled easily if there is some sort of problem or you need to change things for whatever reason.

Things that are built for eternity become a nuisance after a year.

Just received my 1976 T2 from Italy. That was a lot of dough and risk to get that car, but the model is worth every penny: Unbelievably rich in detail. A fantastic model that I can only recommend to anybody who is serious about collecting these cars. I'll take some pictures and post them later.
