This thread has a misleading title. I thought "Ernie the Eagle" was that British ski jumper from about 15 years ago.

I'll let you know when I'm gonna go down to FatBillyBob's. I'm gonna have the gears cryo'd, and polished. So I'll be down to FBB's to pick up the other gears later this week.

Ah, the Force is strong with this Brotherhood.

Of course, now you've got to get Funk Soul Brotha the super-secret 348 tranny filter so that he can tell us if it has to be installed with the gear box apart, or if there is a way to do it with the tranny still in the car and in one piece.

Actually its nothing more than a plastic screen. Kind of like the oil screen on the bottom of the oil tank. It keeps large pieces out of the tranny oil pump. It's more of a safety net. So unless you have something busted in the trans, there really isn't any reason to open up the cover. So that you know were it is, it's located inside the cover that the speedo/tach sensor is plugged into on the tranny.

    Thanks.

So it's safe to say that:
    1. You can not change the plastic filter (unless you take apart the tranny) and
    2. You have no need to change the plastic filter (unless you were already planning to take the tranny apart)??

OK, now, do we have a tranny oil pump **in addition to** our 2 dry sump oil pumps, or does one oil pump do double-duty?

**also, we are talking about the 115538 filter highlighted in this picture, correct?

    1) No, you don't have to take the tranny appart to get to the transmission oil filter/screen. But you may have to remove the cat, for better access to the cover.

    2) Unless you have reason to suspect pieces of metal may be in the tranny, there really isn't any need to open the cover. But if you do need to open it, yes it is a good idea to clean it off. Kind of like you don't remove the bottom cover of the oil tank, and replace the gasket, and clean the oil screen, every time you change the oil. There really isn't a need for it.

Yes there is a tranny oil pump "in addition" to the sumps in the engine. Yup 115538 that's the part.

The trans filter is not really a filter like an oil filter. It does not need changing or cleaning unles the GB is taken apart. It is more like a screen just to catch big parts like you can't call that drain screen in the bottom of your shower a filter either. But you can get it out without a complete disassembly just a cover removal if you want. Yup, you guys can come on down. I'll be free between 9:30am - 5pm thursday. Matt should be an honorary member of the 348 brotherhood. He has more 348 grease under his fingernails than 90% of 348 owners. I know I put it there. Jack be $nice$ to Ernie...he still needs to order synchro rings and bearings...

The transmission oil pump gears are items #41 & #42 in the exploded diagram, driven off the end of the transmission main shaft.

Thanks. You know, for a car that doesn't have a power top or power steering or power seats or electrically-adjustable shocks or an F1 transmission, the 348 still has a lot of complexity with 2 oil pumps, 1 gear oil pump, 2 fuel pumps, 2 engine ECUs, 2 exhaust ECUs, 1 ABS ECU that has redundant circuit boards, and 1 climate computer.

You want complexity? How about a car with a fuel filler release cable inside the engine compartment, AND an engine compartment release cable inside the fuel filler compartment! I love it! The design staff must have stayed up late working on that one.

Laugh if you must, but I'm comforted by those two extra cables...having had the misfortune of having to replace one on a Porsche 928 once (which had no such redundancy). The first pain was getting the hood open.

    Ouch.

Ernie, how much is all this going to cost you in parts? I remember reading about it but if you can refresh my memory, what exactly are you doing again?

The pricing is between Ernie and me. Let's just say that these two parts combined, will cost less than 1/2 his original quote on JUST the gear from a source in North America.

    Thanks FBB.

I just remember putting in 2 hours to reattached the clutch only to realize that we were using too long of studs and the plates would not go together!!

Once we got the right size, it took 5 minutes. LOL!!

Odd thing is that I could not imagine a better way of spending 10 hours without a break except for pizza and cookies. I learned more from you in that time then I did in the previous 5 years of wrenching.

Sorry, let me rephrase and explain....

I try to get ideas of how much certain procedures cost. Since, the 348 gearbox is known to not be that strong, I figured that this is something that could possibly go wrong with mine. Rephrasing my question, what exactly is wrong with the car, what are the parts that need to fixed, and how much would the parts cost if you were buying them from a supplier that is not a dealer. I don't want or need any specific information about your transaction, just what to expect in general.
