No this is not the issue. The GB is very strong. I have beat mine for about 10 years...5 of those on the track...1.5 of the last 5 under race conditions with nothing more than an oil change. The problem is sloppy Ferrari assembly and even sloppier rebuilding by others. To my knowledge not one GB I have rebuilt has failed and I have nothing but home made special Ferrari tools and sound mechanical principals of part replacement. These GB's are bullet proof IMO. In Ernie's case some BOZO opened his box to rebuild it and did it improperly and it grenaded again. Why it broke the first time is likely to be the typical Ferari sloppiness. In my case the clutch lock ring was not staked and it backed out and gears broke. This a simple stupid mistake...too much Italian red at lunch break. Anyone to welcome to check out my racecar. it never breaks and always starts.

Does the flywheel grease problem, triple seal leaking problem, or T/O bearing leak problem have any effect on the gearbox? After putting new clutch plates in my car, I learned a lot about the workings of the Slave/TO assembly and clutch and flywheel assembly. However I know very little about the actual workings of the 348 gearbox.

My car will give a little thud when I shift it into 2nd sometimes if I shift in too fast. I don't want to tear it down and overshoot something that might not actually be a problem....but I would like to learn about it in case that day comes, that way I can do the work myself.

JRR - Daniel I will probably be pinging you as well for some parts, beyond the throwout bearing I got from you already, here as well soon when I actually get my gearbox the rest of the way apart. To much work (the crappy kind that takes up Ferrari time) to do. Then sad enough its snowing tonight as well here in minnesota. Ferrari season is over at last. :(

On the topic of the tranny bearings, besides the roller bearings it seems that most of the others should be available at any good bearing supplier and more than likely they are much more solid than the original Ferrari parts. You have any luck with this FBB?

Did you hear Ernie that we and two other 348 owners who had tranny failures at the end of the year here drove TRutlands to start offering rebuilt gearboxes for the low price of 10k with a core up from 7k earlier. Talk about a deal! :)

Wait a minute. Are you saying that they "raised" the price to $10k?

Yep originally they said $8500 when I called a month back when this all first happened and now its up to $10,000 when I called here a few days back looking for parts. I was told it went up due to demand.

Demand? From who, one guy? I never called them. Plus they want the money AND the core. Sorry but no thanks.

WAAAAAAAY cheaper to do the job yourself.

Not sure man where the "demand" was from. I am rebuilding my own. Gears look good but I need to figure out what other parts I need to replace. Doing all bearings and have to do the oil pump because the failure chewed it up pretty good.

Erine FBB said your oil pump was chewed up as well you get a new one?

Well Al...the deal is the syncro especially 2nd can be a bit slow. If you heal toe the GB you can shift nearly as fast as you want. I do this as a matter of course since I'm a racer. If you heel toe it and the problem goes away the problem is most definately in the sysnchros. The synchro problem may be cured with nothing more amazing than a change of gerabox oil and weight.

Maybe TR hired the putz that rebuilt Erinie's GB. My guess is that they put $1000 in parts and bill out 10k! Even at retail FNA prices it is way cheaper to do it yourself and I'm living proof it can be done in just your garage. If I pay a pro to do it they better have all the Ferrari special tools and knowledge to do the job. What is their guarantee on the GB? So far I have never seen a pro with all the Ferrari tools to do this job such as the jig to measure the pinion bevel gear to the case.

Actually it's the cover for the oil gears. Because the bearing was shot, the shaft was moving, and the end started to grind into the cover. All the cover does is hold the gears in place, so I'm gonna just clean up the rough edges and reuse it. The oil gears were fine.
