Looking at the F430 there appears to be two types of battery chargers coming with the cars. Some car come equipped with the "old school' factory Ferrari battery charger that comes in leatherette case. The thing is kind of pre-war looking, like an old Lionel toy train transformer.

The second type of charger is a more modern asian made piece in a blister pack.

Does anyone have any background info on what the story is behind these two units.

Picture Below is the old school unit...

What's confusing me is that some cars come with no charger, others come with the old school unit, then some have the new school unit and others have both the new school AND prewire for the oldschool one.

There are two basic models of the newer one you show. One is 750Ma and the other is 1500Ma (I think). They are about $30-$60 available at most auto parts stores.
They have a computer chip so that they optimally charge the battery. I have never seen one of the old units you show.

The old one is the VERY high priced one offered by Ferrari that usually lasts about 2 hours charging time.

The second one is the one that works day in and day out. Have installed many. Never a complaint.

    Sander,

First, I like your watch........ I own the Emergency version.

Now, to answer your question. It looks like the first one is an "official" Ferrari charger. The "new style" charger is manufactured by Battery Tender and probably being provided by dealers. I have several Battery Tenders and they work great. Just remember to plug it into the car first, then plug it into the wall outlet.

Also, there are good options such as cig lighter adapters and length extensions available.

So the old one is the one you get when you "Pre wiring and Kit for Battery Charging" that shows on the factory options guide for $934 USD??

When you say last "two hours charge time? do you mean it take only two hours to charge a battery or do you mean that it breaks after only being used for two hours?

Very Very high failure rate for that item. For the cost it should have been Mil Spec quality but instead it is sub Radio Shack quality.

The one for less than $100 beats it hands down.

My suggestion is to keep it in the wrapper for a "OOOh look at this" item for the next guy. Or save it for 25 years and Shaughnessy will buy it from you on Ebay for $12.5k

This comment made me read the FAQ on the Battery Tender page (http://batterytender.com/operating_instructions.php). I learned that I was plugging it in backwards - to the wall first, then the charger (and when I disconnected it, I was unplugging the connector first then the AC from the wall). Thanks for the heads up!

I noticed a tip on the FAQ page that made me wonder. It said NEVER to set the charger above the battery. Does anyone know why? What kind of harm could this cause?

Gases are released from the battery during charging. It is possible that an electric spark ( from the charger) could cause an explosion. Good way to torch your car.

    Glad it helped..........

    1. It is important to plug it into the car side first so the circuitry can switch to charge. ( I usually wait a minute or two) If you plug it into the wall outlet first the BT might not switch and even if it shows a green light the BT might not be trickle charging.

    2. I'm sure the BT can be above the battery in height. Mine is secured to the rail for the garage door, far out of the way of the battery. I agree that it should not be put "above" or near the battery because of gases off the battery and this being an electrical device.

    Note - I have 3 Battery Tender Waterproof 800ma

Thanks for the input, I'll let my customers know, this info should prevent some dead battery frustrations with the factory chargers.

Hydrogen is the answer. The battery releases hydrogen when it is charged, and as hydrogen is the lightest molecule it floats up away from the battery. When mixed with oxygen - which in volume is about 21% of the air in your garage, and ignited by a spark from your charger it will go ‘BANG!’ as in Hindenburg bang, immediately relieving you of any concern that your battery may be weak, and possibly relieving you of your car and your garage.

Now, the chances of a large amount of hydrogen escaping from a reasonably charged battery, and it then finding an open spark in your new charger, are small, but then again if you move the charger the chances are zero, and in real terms zero is infinitely better than small.

    And that’s about it.
