I'm thinking about buying a used top for my 308 and installing mounting brackets and hardware to haul one of my karts. Who thinks that the top would support this crazy idea?

I haul a 10' 6" balsa veneer Velzy surfboard, but you are talking a lil' more weight there, bra...I'd go with a hitch and a trailer.

Or at best find a rigid roof rack that grabs your roof rails........

He's got a GTS as I recall, not really anything rigid there to connect to. How much do these weigh, and what are they worth? You're betting a lot on the integrity of those two little latches.

Regarding trailers and 308s -- that concept doesn't meet with much approval here :D

Pete's car also does not have the rain rail on the windshield side that was added in 1980 so if those two pins snap, the kart will be in the drivers seat.

I would not put even 30 pounds on the roof.

    1. it's made from fiberglass
    2. Ferrari made it
    3. no front support for the top
    4. Ferrari made it
    5. You might crack the $2000 windshield
    6. Ferrari made it
    7. Replacement tops are about $1000 or more.

    So according to murphy's law.....

    $1000 for the top
    $ 200 for roof rack
    $2000 for windshield
    $2000 for new seats
    $1500 for new center console
    $3000 for new windshield frame

    $2000 for windshield

    Total $9700.00......................

Driving down the highway doing 80 miles an hour in your Ferrari with a kart on the roof watching people drive off te road looking at it, PRICELESS!

We used to launch our 14' Sunfish from the roof of a '63 Impala.

    Engineering was definately involved........

Think of the liability if the cart were to blow off and hurt someone.... is that worth the risk?

Is this something a reasonable person would do?

A hitch set-up would be a much better idea. Put a small 1" reciever stlye hitch on the back and you could also use it for a bike rack, etc.

What kind of kart are we talking about?
Mine is about 175 lbs dry, and cost more like $7K.
Spend $3K or less and buy an old truck to haul the kart. That is what I did, and it has worked great.
I remember seen back in the days one guy carry his kart on top of a VW Rabbit, and another one used to haul the kart INSIDE an AMP Gremlin, some assembly required tho.

I thought about that to get race tires to the race. I'm leaning toward a small trailer, but I want to take a good look at building a lugage-type rack for the rear deck lid first. A deck lid rack my work for you too. I'm planning to have something done one way or the other by spring....I'll put on my fire suit and post pics of whatever I decide to do :)

Take it from me, putting the kart atop the 308 is a bad idea. I raced karts for 4 years and transported them in unimaginable ways due to a lack of available tow vehicles. Place a kart on a 308 roof and you will almost surely damage / warp the window frame if not crack the front glass. You must own another vehicle. Buy a tiny trailer for it (like $3-400) or put it on a sturdy roof rack of a non-Italian built car. One other thing is that karts leak a lot of oil, this way your Ferrari will have oil drips on top and below.

Buy a GTB and you can mount a roof rack on it for the kart. Functional and you would still look cool.

No, just my cat likes to Huff the stuff :)

The possibility of the windshield cracking is not good :(

Two people could take it off and on.

I'm more concearned about having to stop fast with the hood 'wearing' the kart!
