Your making me laugh. Maybe I didn't explain myself very well. The F40 is by modern day standards, (when the road laws say 100k ) an awesome machine that is very quick. Unless you've driven an F40, you have no idea what fast is. 355/360/porsche turbo /Wrx/ Massa/lambo......................................
none of these are quick compared with an F40. They are just not in the same league........................so for those who have never driven an F40, you just don't understand. You see ,I used to think my 512BB was quick. People used to talk about F40's and fast cars and I thought, "oh yeah, okay, the F40's a bit faster than my 512BB. When you drive an F40, "a bit" turns into a massive amount. An F40 would be 3 times faster than a 512BB (which isn't a slow car anyway). So what I was getting at is that even having an ENZO, which is faster than an F40 (or so they say), is no point, because on the open road you just can't use it. (a track day is a different thing.) I'm talking about driving on the open roads with other traffic.

The F40, F50, Enzo, McLaren F1, Koenigsegg, Pagani Zonda, Saleen S7, etc etc are certainly quick compared with the majority of road cars. To get to a level where driving those cars becomes second nature, the best way to achieve this is to race, preferably open-wheel cars. And if not race, then be able to hot lap competitively. In most of the junior Formulae you have alot of power; okay, maybe not as much as V8 Supercars / GT cars / LeMans / DTM, etc, but you have half the weight. The power required to accelerate a car increases exponentially as the weight increases. Then once you factor in the aero, you not only have incredible acceleration, but unbelievable cornering and braking ability, and it gets to the point where it becomes a physical struggle to drive the cars for more than a few laps.

That is my idea of the pinnacle of speed when it comes to motor cars, and is IMO the best way to aquire the skills to be able to drive the greatest super exotics safely while still being able to explore their performance.

I still missed you guys! I was hovering around the GT4, but to no avail. Did any of you guys go to the Ferrari / Maserati dinner at Goucho's afterwards? Met some great people. :)

Power to weight is what it's all about, and yet the headline figures are all about horsepower. People think the F40 is much faster than the 288GTO and the F50; but take a look at the weights as well. The 288 weighs only 1168kg and has 400hp. The F40 weighs about 1225kg and has 478hp. The F50 weighs about 1325kg and has 513hp. So the 288 has 2.92kg per hp, the F40 has 2.56kg/hp and the F50 has 2.58kg/hp- not that much in it is there?

The characteristics of a turbo engine also make it "feel" faster in the seat of the pants as a result of that wave of torque and power when it comes on boost. In the case of the F40 it is very docile off boost and a real animal on boost. I have heard owners describe the F40 as a real roller coaster ride as a result.

Light weight also makes a car easier to drive. Less mass to accelerate, brake and turn. I reckon the 288 would be like a high powered go cart in comparison to the F50.

The 288 GTO is turbocharged also. Is its power delivery as on/off as the F40, or is more linear?

Older technology in the 288, so maybe so. I have never heard it described in the same fashion as the F40. Phil has driven both, so maybe he can comment.

who told you the F40 is on off? have you driven one yet? it's not.

i've spoken to people of the years who have driven an F40 and a GTO and they all seem to agree on one thing...compared to the F40 the 288 is a truck. I'm sure Gil would agree, even though he hasn't driven one.

both tiff needle and jeremy clarkson stated that the F40 doesn't have any sudden surge of power, its quite constant.

Oh my, here is a 288 GTO for the best part of half a million less than your friends paid. Would you like a calculator?

Oh dear, the Jaguar XJ220 was smashed in the rally today.

Not sure what happened exactly, but I have heard from one of the competitors that it's shorter by 2 feet...

    OH NO!!!

That's a damn shame. I know they're not perfect, but I think XJ220s look bloody hot. I have a bit of a soft spot for them since the time I was a kid and I first saw one in the flesh at the 1993 Melbourne Motor Show. It's one of those cars that takes me back to when I was very young. I hope it's repairable.

Well, it had around 200 miles (320km) on the clock before the rally begun. Then factor in the mileage for each day of the rally.

    So Wednesday's Parade and Prologue (~5km), Thursday (202km), Friday (236km) and lets say half of today (209/2 = 104.5km), that's about 550km.

    320km + 550km = 870km

So total mileage on the car works out to ~ 900km before it was smashed. You can do the math as to what the dollar / mile ratio would be.

It's amusing to think that more mileage has been put on the car in the past two days than in its 10+ year life.
