It's been a learning experience. GT Car Parts has been great. Finally figured out how to post pics. Image Unavailable, Please Login
First of all, every I did I had to do twice because the order of events matters and I hadn't done one before. I hadn't even taken it apart. Quite a jigsaw puzzle, but every nut and bolt was there. I appeared to me it would be easier to put the rear header on the head first and then the head on the car. The headers still have all that aluminum stuff on, maybe that matters. It worked easily that way.
Well now, that looks a lot better. What's with re-installing with one head off? What year and model? Looks like 308i or QV. Either way, good for you. You'll know your way around it and therefore be able to "drive it like you can fix it." John
For future reference the rear header slips in from underneath rather easily. I lower the motor in at about a 45 degree angle with the forward head up and once it is 3/4 of the way in I lift up the front header on the studs and bolt it on. FWIW the factory put them in complete, the A/C was even on the motor!
78 308. I got it in April, got it running in June, got it running right in August. I've seen pictures of them going in all together and I don't get that at all. I asked a friend at the local Ferrari gurus how they got them back in without nicking anything and he said they have a great painter.
Glutton for punishment? Are we to venture that you pulled the engine, rebuilt the bottom end, then put it in without putting the rebuilt heads back on? That seems like quite a bit of extra work if you ask me.
Yes, glutton for punishment. No, put motor all together, didn't like how it was going in, pulled the rear head back off, put it in, put the head back on. Putting it in with the head off only made things easier. Maybe not artistic, but easier. As I said in the earlier post, I did everything twice. Twice is better, right?
Cool project. Good luck with it. Who were the "local gurus"? Grand Touring? I hear those guys are pretty sharp. John
"No comment" on the gurus. This is how I found it. Paint's pretty good, painting is not one of my strengths. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hey, you now know at least twice as much as you would have if it had gone in en suite. The 'fore and aft' pics speak volumes about the TLC that went into this.
Hey Wax, S.D. Jr with a palmetto on his head? You going to do the whole crew, Frank, Dean, Joey, et al ?
Great car. Glad you rebuilt it rather than junk or part it out. You should enjoy it for quite a while. Art
And Allied Industrial Machine in Falls Church, Va. did great work . Been using them since '74. They did the machine work including fixing the head with the mushed valves, and put the bottom end together.
