    Hello,

I just bought a 1988 Euro-spec TR recently and noticed a "thumping" noise on the right side only when steering to the left. It happens at low and high speeds with it being more noticeable at higher speeds (35-65).

I took the car over to Army base auto shop this weekend to get it off the ground and removed the wheels to check things out. I removed and inspected all the brake pads but found nothing unusual. I saw nothing in the wheel wells to indicate tire rub.

I did see a thread in the archives with something similar to my issue that mentioned re-torqueing the single knock bolt for the wheels. I have the Ferrari 75mm socket and a Torqometer wrench. I removed all the bolts and cleaned them, the wheel and hub splines. Then I liberally coated all the surfaces with the copper-based anti-seize and torqued the wheels down to 325 ft. lbs.

    Still have the noise!

I am wondering if it might be the right side front or rear (maybe both) wheel bearings. I know there is 1 on the front and 2 in the rear (inner, outer).

I would appreciate any advice and experience.

    Thanks, Joe

?CV joints (if rear)? ?Tie rods? Those are likely culprits...careful driving it until you figure it out!

I forgot to mention that I did pull out and in on the half shafts to check CV joints but did not meet any resistance or hear any suspecting noises.

I recently had a similiar issue with my 86 TR. I would hear the thump noise when I entered my driveway at a slow speed with the wheels turned to the left. The steering rack was broken and had to be replaced. With the car up on the lift everything looked ok until you turn the wheels all the way to the left and look at the end of the steering rack.

You may want to get that checked out before you drive it again. You wouldn't want to lose steering control of one or both of your front wheels while you are driving.

    Good luck with your fix.

Could this thump noise be the diff lock clutches making a noise, I am sure I read somewhere that sometimes these clutches can grip a little and particularly when on a full lock basis and one wheel is turning faster than another ie when you are turning they can grip occasionally. Terrible explanation but I am sure someone else can expand on what I mean.
    regards Tony

Have you checked your wheel bearings? a bad or real loose bearing can do this.

    Thanks for the responses!

Last night I removed and again re-torqued the wheels and then shook to tires to see if there was any play/noise coming from a hub.

The one thing I did notice when I removed the right rear wheel, was that the outer part of the hub splines was not flush with the outer part of the wheel splines. I thought that when the knock off is on that this would create enough room/slop to cause the wheel to move slightly on the hub????

I did not notice anything unusual or noise when I shook the wheels while on the car.

I will take it out for a spin later today when I put back on the air intake assembly. I am re-painting them with the black crinkle coat paint this morning after prepping everything last night.

Again, thanks and I will post a result later.

    Joe

one thing I have noticed on my 86 TR on two separate occations, is becareful how much grease and where you put it on your splined hubs. there is a small spherical surface which your wheel mates to. grease can collect here and solidify with heat and pressure from the lugnut. it does not allow the wheel to fully seat properly and I got a lump, lump, lump sound from my right front wheel. I took the wheel off, cleaned the dried grease scale on this spherical surface and replaced the wheel. sound gone. this scale only allows contact in several places and the wheel can shift as it turns round.there should only be a light film on the spline so that the wheel can come off after long periods of being attached. make sure the mating surface is really clean on both the spindle and the steel wheel insert.
