So tonight I had the car out and had it running with the the engine hood open. And Something just did not sound right to me.....valves clicking (old bmw habit) so I check my oil level and on the stick it does not even read!! So I flipped out thinking I have been running the car hard with almost no oil in it.

I ran down to Shell the only place still open and bought 3 bottles only put 2 in and now it is saying it is over full and blows smoke when I turn it on....UGG. I should mention I was in San Diego and I had to drive back to O.C tonight too. Did this cause any damage or anything? I am getting the Oil changed on Friday anyways but still....Why would this happen? How could two quarts go from no reading to over full on the stick?

I was told to if you overfill it blow oil all over the engine bay area any truth to that?

    Thanks guys.

You checked it when it was too cold. The manual states to ck it with an oil temp of at least 165 or 170 degrees. That is the second line from the left on the oil temp gauge. The oil resevoir is rather tall and slim with purpose and oil expands thermally a great deal so the level changes greatly with temperature.

You have almost certainly gotten some in the crank breather system via the 2 hoses at the top of the tank near the oil cap.

You really should find a way to suck some of the oil out before driving the car.

The oil was hot, the car had been driven for almost 2 hours prior to me checking the oil. Is there any way to get some oil out?

The oil might have been hot, but how long was the engine shut off before you checked the level? There are a few ways to get the oil out:

    1. Use a siphon or extractor to pull some out of the rear tank

    2. Open the plug at the bottom of the rear tank (you'll need to refill somewhere around 4 liters -- maybe a bit more)

    3. Turn the car upside down and shake vigorously. (Not recommended)
