My entire zipper needs to be replaced in my trunk. The actual cover is in great shape and I only need the zipper repaired. I want to take the cover out and bring it to a shop to be repaired. Has anyone tried this? Maybe I am better trying to find someone to fix it in the car.

There should be some good threads in the archives, mainly under 308's. I took mine out (it's easy) and had a sail shop replace the entire zipper. Others have gone yo upholstery shops. But someone (Verrell?) noted that it was usually just the zipper slide that need replacing, and gave instructions on that.

Thanks I searched for 308 Zipper and found what I need.....my earlier 328 zipper search did not bring up the details I needed!

When I bought my car the previous owner reminded me he has tried everything and I should look for a seamstress to install a new zipper.

I did a search on Yahoo... "zipper repair" found a couple nice articles. I fixed my zipper in five minutes using two large pair of channel lock and some silicone spray, once I understood how the mechanism was supposed to work.

My closer was going over the zipper and not closing anything. It simply had to be compressed slightly so that it would lock the teeth toghether.

My zipper was not fixable so I decided to remove the boot and bring it to a repair shop to be replaced. This was a BAD idea. I was being very careful....or so I thought.....but. it tore when I was taking it out. I need a new one now. I wonder if it could have been fixed while in the car....too late now.

FWIW, I went to through the pain of getting the cover out and removing the old glue-remnants, but ended up with pinching the zipper slide on each side ever so gently with a pair of pliers, et voila!

In July at the end of my Indy trip the zipper gave out on my 308QV. I'd already been down to using just one of the sliders since the other wouldn't close the zipper, but my second one apparently also got past its wear tolerance. Using pliers to tighten them up didn't work either.

I went down to the local fabric store (Hancock Fabrics) and was about to buy a couple of short replacement coil zippers to get the sliders off of, but at the counter I asked if they had just replacement siders. They did -- zipper repair kits for just 80 cents each!! They had two different sizes, so I bought both since I wasn't sure.

Mine is fixed now, using Verell's method of lifting off one corner of the boot and cutting about an inch or so of the thread so I could get to the end of the zipper to remove and replace the slider. For reference, the original is a size #5.
