There is a thread in the archives here about the P5. IIRC, the P5 was "deconstructed" by Pininfarina to build the similar-looking Alfa 33 showcar in the late Sixties, so it didn't exist for many years. Then a Japanese enthusiast had a copy of the P5 built by Pf for his own collection. Experts can verify. Or shoot full of holes.

RM auctions think the Ferrari they have in their January auction is the P5. I really doubt that. An article in a recent Hemmings stated the car still exists. I knew about the Japanese collector having a copy, does anyone know about this car? Contact? Chassis used?

I would like to get complete dimensions of the P5 if possible.

    Thanks

The 0846 papers have info about P5 including all dimensions:

    http://www.glickenhaus.com/jim/project.pdf

P5's dimensions prove that original P5, nor replica P5, were never built on the remains of 0846. In addition there is correspondence in my document from Winston Goodfellow about replica P5 which show that replica P5 may have been built on a 365 P2/3 chassis:

    "The chassis is from a 365 P2/3"
    Lorenzo Ramaciotti (Of PF)

So far as I know 0862 was built in 69 as a 212 E. I don't see how that chassis could have been used for the original P5 but I'd like to see RM's reasons for believing that it was.

I remember an article a few years ago about French collector Pierre Bardinon (unsure about spelling). He owns the "mas du clos" race track.
He has one 288evo in his collection.
He still uses his and made comment that the car was fairly under-developped when it was delivered to him : on of the wheels fell off while driving at race speed....

What do you think of R&M's claim that 0862 was P5's original chassis?

In the October 2005 Hemming's Sports and Exotic Car magazine, Karl Ludvigsen authored a photo filled 5 page article about the 250 P5.

In this article he states that Ettore Masschesi of Alfa Romeo liked the P5 showcar so much that in 1969 he had Pinninfarina get Ferrari's permission to remove the P5's body and put it in a modified form on a slightly shorter Alfa chassis, thus creating the 33/2.

He further states that the original P5 un-adorned chassis remained at Pinninfarina until at least 1987. Leonardo Fioravanti remembered this when he left the company at that time.

There is no trace of the chassis after that.

    Any opinions?

I don't think so. The car RM will be selling is a 212E Montagna. When they say "Its chassis was the basis for Pininfarina’s 1968 Ferrari 250 P5 concept car displayed at Geneva, Turin and Los Angeles." I don't think they mean the ACTUAL chassis on this car, just the type of chassis

    Am i wrong here?

Looks like a replica of one to me - there's no working hood or pop-up lights like the other 2.

NNO: Where did you get that photo? Magazine? You took it?

From the front it does look like a replica without headlights, and the only replica I know of was by Jim Carpenter. I believe he finished four cars.

NNO: The mirrors are wrong too, really appears to be a Carpenter replica 288 Evoluzione.
