Art, Good eye, yes that is a 365 California tail. It's one of two 365 California's that we work on. Name the other Ferrari's in the photo and you get a prize. KTG, Yes that is a real 888 Corsa. In fact, it is Carl Fogarty's factory works bike from the 1993 World Superbike season. Brian
Motob, My guesses are as follows: befind the 365 Cal is a 166/212/340 touring coupe (similar style to barchetta but with a roof) I would guess '51 - '53 period. in front of 365 Cal is a 330/365 GTC - my guess is 365 because there is no 330 logo above Ferrari on the trunk in front of the TR is either a 250 SWB or a 250 TDF (early body style), - my guess is SWB because I think I see a hint of a chrome headlamp bezel in the picture. Regards, Art S.
The first 250 Testa Rossa #0666 had 3 carbs, not 6, at its first race, the 1957 Nurburgring 1000 KM. Also interesting is that #0704 did not have a 250 engine at its first race, Le Mans 1957, but more like a 260 engine with 3117cc. It got a 250 engine afterwards. Neither of these 250 Testa Rossa prototypes had red heads in their first races.
Steve, I thought a quick Google image search would answer my question, but I can't find a good picture... Did they actually have painted heads? Or is it just the valve covers?
Just the cam covers. Here is 250 Testa Rossa Works Prototype 0704TR with red head cam covers. Picture copyright Tom Hartley Junior. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Just a reminder, the first Testa Rossas were the MDTR four cylinder race cars with the red painted valve covers. Best regards, Robert
The 500 Testa Rossa with front mounted gearbox and live rear axle to be precise, which was a replacement for the 500 Mondial S2 with transaxle and de Dion rear suspension. Then came the beautiful 500 TRC. So the Testa Rossa evolution was 500 Testa Rossa > 500TRC > '57 Works Prototype 250 Testa Rossa > 250 TR58 (with differences to the Works cars mostly with transaxles (except 0666) and de Dion rear suspension ) > 250 TR59 > 250 TR59/60 > 250 TRI60 > 250 TR61 > 330 TR/LM.
Works prototype 250 TR #0666 also had a 3117 cc engine at Le Mans, 1957, but with 4 cam shafts. It did not start due to a failed piston.
I believe I saw this same car at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn when I was in High School back around 1981. It was next to a 300SLR.
I believe it had a plaid interior back then, not leather.....my Father took "stereo" pictures of the car too. I have them and will post if I'm able to transfer. The plaid interior could also have been on the Mercedes, but I think on the TR too.
I forgot the 625 TRC (2) along with the 500 TRC, one of which, Official Ferrari Agent John von Neumann's 0672 MDTR, got a 250 TR (0750) engine in 1958.
Steve: Are you SURE #0666 used a four cam motor at Le Mans? I believe it used a two cam engine that was a prototype for the Tipo 128LM engine in the 250 Testa Rossa. I am sure there are photos of this car at Le Mans showing the motor.
Dyke, No, I am not sure as I have never seen a picture of the 4 cam motor in 0666 or a 4 cam motor used in a 250 TR. Does anyone have one? For Le Mans 1957 the 4 cam engine of 0666 and the 3117 cc engine size is mentioned in Chris Nixon's book Sports Car Heaven along with the SOHC and 3117 cc engine of 0704TR. The Joel Finn Ferrari Testa Rossa V12 book says something similar. I have a picture of 0666 with 3 carbs at the 1957 Nurburgring 1000 km and the SOHC engine of 0704TR with silver cam covers at LM 57. Perhaps it was actually 0704TR that at some point had a twin plug 4 cam engine in it which may be why it had 4 coils on it?
Another thing to look for is evidence of an oil tank on either car. The four cam engines were dry sump, and the early development two cam motors were wet sump. Also the four cam engines were not built to be attached directly to the gearbox, as were the early TR motors.
Refer back to the picture in post #16 in this thread. It’s clearly a 3-carb, twin cam, 2-liter 4 cylinder. Matt
Matt, That's an in line DOHC 4 cylinder engine with 2 big double choke Webers from a 500 TRC. (Only the cam covers should be red, not the whole engine.) We were talking about a 4 cam (DOHC) 3117c cc V12 engine that is stated to have been used in #0666 or possibly #0704.
