One that has been going on down here (Louisiana) is being approached by someone who is usually very clean cut...they claim that they are with the Red-Cross or some other reputable charity organization and ask for $$$ for Katrina victims.

I actually had this "kid" (looked to me to be no more than 20yo or so) come to my front door and give me a sales pitch on donations...I expressed to him that I too was an evacuee and could sympathize with the cause. I began to feel uneasy when he started pushing me for money, at which point I realized that he was dressed just like an average joe (ie. NO identifing insignias...). When I asked him for some form of Red-Cross ID, he stammered, and then bailed. I mean he BAILED...you would have sworn that I pulled a gun on the guy.

It is a shame all of the scams that are going on down here right now because of Katrina....

Good for you Darth, I am glad that you did not get out of the car....Myself, and many of my close friends have been fortunate enough to live through some pretty hairy situations, and the moment you get out of your car, you are on their turf...

I didn't get out of my car. At first, they backed up like the were after my parking space. When the guy rolled down the window to talk to me I thought he was going to ask for directions, or something of that nature.

Aside from the fact that i'm a rather large person, these types of people don't approach me... i had the speakers-in-the-van guys approach me once in the parking lot of a bank, but i didn't even realize it was a scam - i was just so poor at the time, i didn't even want to hear the word "speakers"...

i keep an aluminum bat in my car for occasions like these... Never had to use it, but i would much rather have it and never use it, than not have it and end up needing it...

LOL funny you guys mention the white van gig... Just yesterday I was at a local gas station in Irvine filling up his 7 series... and sure enough 2 big (and very stoned) dudes in a white minivan (why are they always white? the van that is) pull up and start asking me if we want any surround sound stuff. First time i've ever been approached, and it was honestly rather humerous. Needless to say they didn't stick around long.

Can they really be making any $$$ off this crap?

OK, I have to ask. In the past three months I've been approach twice, apparently randomly, on two different occasions by two different pairs of guys asking me if I need any home theater equipment. They "have it" and need to sell it for cheap or it's an overstock etc. Once was a white van (outside of petsmart) once was in a white truck (outside of blockbuster). Obviously there's something going on. On the second occasion, I called the city police non-emergency line to file a complaint or register a concern, they couldn't have cared less about the concern in general and told me to call back if it happened again to they could send a cop out to get the guys.

So I ask now, WTF? Is the "white van speaker" scam a known thing? Maybe I'm just wet behind the ears here.
