I am looking to replace the stereo in my 328 soon. I have done a search on this site and am a little confused. Some people say that a 6.5" speaker will fit the door, and yet i have seen pictures of jerrys 328 interior resto where he has used kef 5.25" speakers. As i am hoping to find some on e-bay(where else!), what is the correct size that will go straight in without any modification where the standard ones are located..thanks!

The 328 should take most 6" speakers without modification. A 6.5" will fit if you trim the hole out just a little. I didn't have any trouble putting 6.5" MBQuartz "Q" series speakers in the doors. I did need to trim the metal back just a little.

I managed to get a pair of OEM door speakers which I am going to install this winter. I just measured them and they are 6".

Why on earth would you want to use OEM speakers? Especially with what is available today?

328 will take a 6" or with some brands a 6.5" speaker. I was able to find a Kenwood 6.5" that fit well. Most anything will be better than those rotted out, 19 year old factory speakers. The factory tweeters in my car were okay, but upgrading those wouldn't be a bad idea either. But the door speakers get a full range signal, so upgrading to a coaxial or triaxial speaker will really brighten up the highs as well as improving the bass.

5.25" is the size for my 308, so I'd expect 308/328 to be similar. Yes you can trim the door panel out to fit bigger speakers, but that is your call.

If you can find a local stockist FOCAL V2 are very nice component speakers, a bit light on bass, but very clean sounding and drive well from a standard head unit (ie: no additional amps.). You would have to hide the cross-over unit somewhere inside the door and place the tweeter, which comes with a choice of mounts.

I think i will look for a quality 5.25" speaker. Thanks for the help, i am thinking of a nakamichi cd300 simply because when i was younger i yearned for the dragon cassette deck that really was the dogs boll*x, to partner with them. As for the tweeters i think i will leave well alone.

Guys, guys....please check again...but a 5.25" speaker will NOT fit in a 328. I made the same assumption (I previously had a 308GTS) and bought 5.25" speakers and they were too small!

I was the same way for the dealer installed Blaupunkt cassette back in 81/82.
I found an unused one on ebay a few years ago. It's in there now with an old Blaupunkt eq. Everything downstream from it is modern, though (850w 4ch amp, 6 disc CD with FM modulator and a XM unit)

From the outside it looks circa 1982.
