I actually had a copy of this movie in my hand last night at Blockbuster, when a neighbor grabbed me and told me it was one of the worst movies he's seen. I put it back. Now I'm glad I did.

I watched Sky High with my kids instead. Good family movie.

I remember seeing that movie in the theaters. I was about to kill myself after hearing Dakota Fanning scream for 2 1/2 hours straight.....

That was the scariest part of the movie. Whenever she opens her mouth and exposes those crooked teeth, I nearly have a seizure. I should have gone to see madagascar instead. War of the world was so boring!!!

And that was just a DVD rental. Imagine paying for 8 people plus the usual popcorn & soda when it released at the theatres. Boy was I pissed :(.

Mark.....right-on with "The Thing".......... both the original and remake were great!

Must be something with the 3rd version of stuff........... Aliens3, IndianaJones3 (Temple of Doom), WOTW .... this being the 3rd one, StarTrek3 (whales-r-us not to be confused with the 3rd season of Oprah), Terminator3 (as was said...........OK.......... we all run to the mountain and the movie ends). Only exception to the rule were both StarWarsIII and XI)

Yes. The first two Alien movies were superb.

The 1st movie had alot of suspense.

    The 2nd had more action.

AEon Flux was a cartoon from MTV turned into a movie? That's about as smart as doing another Beevis & Butthead Movie with real live actors this time. Cartoons should stay cartoons!

Anyone have a clue about that red moss that seemed to be everywhere? I heard it was in the book, but I never read it.

Also thought it was a waste of money to see. Oh well.

IIRC, the Martians were "Ares-Forming" earth (versus our one day terraforming Mars). They didn't care about humans, they wanted the planet. The red moss was part of their ecological transformation process.

Was I the only one dying of laughter when he threw that peanut-butter sandwich at the window? I don't remember ever laughing that hard.

It just made it worse when they moved the camera to the other side of the window and it was still stuck to the window.

For the record, I didn't think it was that bad, especially considering the fact that I was already fed-up with Tom's idiotic...ness.

I just rented this movie over the weekend. I have to say that it really made my new surround system shine!

Question; towards the end, when the tripods started going down, Cruise was walking with the flow of people when he asked the soldier if they had taken the tripod down. He then noticed the birds around the tripod..........what was the connection? I couldn't make out what the soldier and Cruise were yelling to each other, regardless of how loud I cranked up the sound.

The birds showed that the tripods shields were down, and that they could now be attacked rather than before when they had those shields and nothing hit them.

Surprising I knew that...I wasnt really paying attention during that movie.

i never saw the original and since there's so much Spielberg association with this flick, i'm hesitant to see other Spielberg films (ie, Munich)...

My biggest beef with the movie is that earth prevailed... Again, i never saw the original and so i don't know how it ended, but if Spielberg ended this movie with earth being destroyed or taken over by aliens, it would've made such a huge impact on everyone... It would've been a milestone movie - at least in my opinion... It's a great way to really move the movie-goer... The suspense, the thrill, all the hope that goes into Cruise's every action - the movie-goer is on the edge of his seat as this dead beat dad tries to finally do right by his kids... And then, when all is said and done, and he's done everything he can and pulled all the rabits out of his hat, end the movie with the aliens winning the "war of the worlds"... It would've been such a smashing ending, because no one would've expected it...

    i think i missed my calling... :)

I agree that this movie was disappointing in alot of ways:- I wasn't bothered by the prosaic story element of a divorced father, dislocated children, etc. Most effective horror movies (and a number of good sci-fi movies) get their power from taking everyday, normal situations- that we can relate to, and then, having everything turned upside down by some disturbing series of events. To me, that's why the first Alien movie directed by Ridley Scott was so effective- the spaceship was not a polished plastic jewel, it was a working environment that was not romantic, and the setting enhanced the claustrophic quality of the movie (for the same reason Carpenter's remake of The Thing is so effective- you truly feel trapped).
WOTW fell down after Tom and kids took refuge with Tim Robbins- the movie started to drag at that point, and the wrap-up was too neat.
Despite all the rhetoric about Cruise, he can act, imo: Born of the Fourth of July was a powerful, depressing performance; he was pretty good in Magnolia, Vanilla Sky and Jerry McGuire.
Frankly, Spielberg can be hugely capable- Schindler's List was brilliantly done, and he can also create shlock-
I am looking forward to 'Munich' since it seems that the movies he delivers best on are the ones about which he is passionate, and this one should be right up his alley.
I liked Independence Day, partly because it was a grab-bag of every stock 'aliens invade earth' movie ever made, and the obvious takes from other films just didn't stop. The movie had a sense of humor, and was satisfying on alot of levels, but it was not disturbing or thought provoking. But, come to think of it, very few Sci-Fi movies succeed at that level: maybe 2001, A Space Odyssey; Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original, and perhaps the Donald Sutherland version); Carpenter's remake of The Thing; Bladerunner (don't get me wrong, I like Bladerunner for alot of reasons, although i found the voiceover annoying when I saw it in the theatre on release- i'm talking here about movies that make you think, rather than simple entertainment). On the simple entertainment front, I'd probably pick the first Star Wars movie, because it did so many things right, but while it was hugely significant in the history of the genre, I don't think it had a real, cerebral impact. Perhaps that's why science fiction is often better read than watched on film, I dunno....

Apparently they used our blood to survive & create their eco-system (hence the red roots all over everything). It is my understanding that our (human) diseases caused them to die because they had no immunity...and that is why they became "sick" & defenseless...

My buddy's girlfriend swears it was the clap that brought them down...

I hope no one big in Hollywood reads this thread and decides to act on your suggestion....Independence Day stunk.

WOW wasn't bad...not outstanding, but better than most action movies.

I generally like Cruise as an actor...he can't play anyone but himself but there have been plenty of roles where he fit right in, and played himself very well. He has a very broad personal range.

Cruises's offscreen behavior...well, not much good to say.
