    Matrix is what I consider a cult classic...a little too esoteric for the mainstream.

    Last five years...Kill Bill I and II.

    Most of the animated Disney and Pixar movies will be classics..

    What are we comparing new movies to as far as being "classic"? Movies that will be as great in 25 years as they are today? I mean Pulp Fiction is a great movie (was on Encore last Sat night too) and its going to be 12 years old in 2006. That movie is timeless and was a break thru movie. Im sure in 20 years ill still watch that movie front to end. (lotta great quotes. Someone pull up that old thread! "No, man. Im pretty F**kin far from O.K.!"

    Is Oceans Eleven a shyt movie?? Sure it is, really.. but when its on, ill watch it! Back to the Future isnt a masterpiece, but to sit down and watch it over and over and over (since November 5, 1985) is still no problem.

    So what makes a movie "classic"? We all almost pee'd ourselves with Old School. Stupid ass movie right?? Or is it?!

    I'd still put the Matrix in a classic category as I believe it will still be viewable years from now and it had several cinematic breakthroughs....

    Reading the thread so far, I'd think only LOTR will have long-term "classic" power. Some of the others mentioned made splashes when they came out, but have ultimately simmered down into just normal, short-term-impact movies. Among the latter would be Titanic, L.A. Confidential, Gladiator, The Mummy & Returns, We Were Soldiers, Thirteen Days ... not sure how far back you want to go here.

    In the case of Full Metal Jacket, I think that it would have been a forgettable movie except for Ermey; I usually don't bother to watch the rest of it after he's killed. It's his personality that also makes The Siege of Firebase Gloria more than just another Platoon spinoff.

    OO-RAH! I think he CARRIED the entire first half of the movie and should have at least rec'd a Supporting Actor nod. There are several great scenes in the second half:
    Animal Mother unloading his M60
    Joker trying to explain the duality of war
    Soul brother being too bookoo
    The helo door gunner
    Joker's on-camera interview

    For the Gen'xrs, I suggest two bookends:

    1. Breakfast Club
    2. Office Space

    For the Boomers, I suggest as bookends:

    1. The Graduate
    2. Fast Times at Ridgemount High

    For the Echo Boomers, I haven't clue. They're too young for bookends yet.

    This is by no means complete - as none of the 007, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Star Trek pics are on here, but hundreds to choose from that run the gamut from 1980-2004 and should:

    Not sure i understand the significance of the numbers and letters assigned to the films listed in Wax's list.
    Here's my short list, since everybody seems to be reaching back more than 5 years, which may actually prove the point:

    Goodfellas- (go back and watch it again if you haven't in a while; it is almost flawless and is probably the best of the genre, excepting the Godfathers I & II);
    Schindler's List (Speilberg approaches a heavy subject with a minimum of unnecessary melodrama), and in the same vein, probably,

    The Pianist;

    Gladiator- (I love R. Scott's work, old and new, but this one is really hard to beat and does not have some of the flaws of the original release of Bladerunner);

    LA Confidential- would be just a step down from the top level- i love the movie, but i'm not sure why it doesn't ring true; perhaps I've just seen too many nouveau noir films.

    Usual Suspects- for the unusual twist, as well as some great character acting;

    I don't think either Kill Bill compares, overall, with PUlP Fiction, although the latter is flawed, and some of the scenes in KB are brilliant;

    I have more to share, but gotta go.

    Simply an alphabetical listing, with rating (5=highest), year and title.
    ___

    Using a "5 year" window is limiting, in that some flix are initially rated highly, may even win every award conceivable, only to fade fast. Others hold up well, no matter how many times they're shown. So, in that sense, "Classic" Film is now a bit like "Classic" Rock. Critics may not have like it at one time or another, but it's stood the test of time.

    I agree with everyone who says LOTR and Titanic. They're both tied with Ben Hur for having 11 Oscars.
    Other than that I'm not sure.
    I haven't seen the 4th Harry Potter but the first 3 are terrible. They are great books but the movies, not so much.
    The latest Star Wars movies have had the worst acting I have ever seen. If you guys really think the themes will be considered more important than the acting, then Star Wars will be a classic.
