I got pulled over a while back ago at a small city just northeast of San Antonio called Selma when I was coming back from Austin. This is my first speeding ticket which I think is pretty good since I've been driving for about 7 years. I dont feel like dealing with it and going through the whole court deal AND I don't have the money to pay for something like that right now. My question is this, Can I just ignore it and never take care of it? As long as I dont pass through there I shouldnt be worried, right? Because if that's the case I can easily go that route. Any thoughts or suggestions on how I should take care of it? Like I said, this is my first ticket and I really don't know what to do. Any easy ways to get out of it?

...oh, and I was going about 81 in a 65 and my court date is for the 22 of December.

Yea...warrants out for arrest is NEVER a good thing. From first-hand experience here. Best thing is to call, see what can be done regarding deferred adjudication, etc.... Take care of it.

Remember the recent incident with Michael Irvin-not the crack pipe-the alias warrant. Jail time is never fun, car impoundation is never pleasant. Either beat the ticket or pay it or you will regret it -BIG TIME!

    you have two choices:

    1. pay
    2. go to court

fail to do one of them and you'll have a warrant for your arrest issued.

You weren't going +20 over - in any event, it will be worth a lot more to you to just pay now and forget about it. A 7 year run is nothing to scoff at.

Selma is the "Speed Catcher Capital" of Texas - has been since the early 70's when we spent lots of miles going between DAL and SAT on I35 - it was just a City Hall building out in the middle of nowhere - and it will always be the same!

NCIC doesn't care if you pass thru there again or want to take a detour. A warrant for arrest for an unpaid ticket becomes your new friend "Casper".

Just call the clerk and set up the deferred adjudication thing. They have to offer it to you if you were doing less than 25 over. Pay the fine, promise to be nice in their jurisdiction for 90 days (easy since you're not going back) and it never shows up on your record.

Since it is your first ticket, you may qualify for deferred adjudication. You will need to talk tot hte court clerk about this program. Basically, you pay the speeding fine and an additional fee for the deferral and if you get no other tickets in a given amount of time (usuaally 3-6 months), your record of the ticket will be expunged. However, you need to check with the court clerk to see if you are eligible, as you excceded 20 mph over the limit, you may not qualify.

deferred adjudication - BAD IDEA. Why the F*!#^& are you guys even suggesting such a thing?

Just take Defensive Driving and be done with it. There will be a fee plus a court fee, plus the cost of Defensive Driving, plus the cost of your driving record. Yes, it will cost about a 100 to 120 total, but that is the cheapest way out of it. Now... with a deferred adjudication plea, you are looking at around 200+. It is really however much the court wants to make from your transaction. What a joke.

If it were me, I'd plea not guilty and fight it, but this is Selma and I'm unfamiliar with how they do things down there. If it is your first, just do the Defensive Driving route.

It's not a bad idea if your time is worth more doing something else than taking the time to go to court or spending 6 hours on defensive driving.

If I got a ticket, I'd pay the deferred adjudication any day given the other options.

Someone told me to plea no contest. Should I do that? When the cop pulled me over he asked why I was speeding and I said that I was going with traffic. I was on the slowest lane when he pulled me over and there was a car right in front of me doing just about the same speed I was doing. Seriously, who goes 65 on I-35? Everyone around me was speeding. I've gone to Austin about 15 times since I've moved up here and I was always go about 10 mph above the limit and I don't stick out like a sore thumb or anything...just smoothly going with traffic. Any way I can explain that in court? Im a college student and I dont have money or time for some speeding ticket. How can a ticket get dismissed? I think Im going to reschedule my court date to somewhere in January. This is such a hassle.

BTW, sorry Jknight....I mean, Guys and GALS! :)

You're not going to get the ticket dismissed, not in Selma. This is about revenue generation, and you're going to generate revenue for them one way or another. Sorry

There is no win-win situation for this ticket. Resolution for this ticket is going to cost you either time or money so pick your poison. Even to re-schedule for court appearance, be prepared to wait on the phone and wait some more.

Small print-this is intended for entertainment purposes only and not as legal advice.

If you fail to handle a ticket, even if it is in another state, TEXDOT will refuse to renew your license, a warrant will be issued for your arrest and you will recive another ticket, a FTA (failure to appear). Then they will add a warrant fee on top of that, maybe two. Trust me, I'm a lawyer ;-)

Not sure about Texas, but most states will not issue an arrest warrant for a traffic citation. They will suspend your license within other states of reprocity.

There's some in this thread who will personally vouch for the fact that Texas municiplaities will indeed issue an arrest warrant for failure to appear in response to a traffic citation. :)

Then they'll duct tape you to a chair and put a towel over your face and pour water into it until you DROWN, or confess.......Oh, no that's SPLENDORA, TX!

In Selma they hunt you down and scratch your car with keys!

Dude, just go back up there and HANDLE IT!!!!!

You should have used the 'folded up $100 dollar bill behind the license' trick...."Oh, look here on the ground, is this YOURS?????"

    ;)

    J/k...don't ever do that.....

Amen to that about not even gonna happen in Selma nor would it even happen to the north in Melissa (at least that's the way it used to be). Towns garner all the roadway they can, then incorporate and stick some cop out there to make their little towns rich. That's just the way of life in Texas. They seem to look for chicken **** stuff to tag you with in addition to the overage ticket in some cases. Way back in the dark ages I'd sit thru some of John's court hearings - heard lots of excuses, very few seemed to work. You waste more time and energy in avoiding the problem and FYI attitude plays a very important part in this "game".
