Can someone please advise where the engine ground strap is located on a '84 308 GTS. When I took the engine out of my car about 2 years ago (!) I thought I made a note as to where it attached to the engine/gearbox and frame. But I guess I didn't. Can anyone help me out, please. Thanks

What did you have done to the engine while it was out?

all that work and one little ground strap is holding you back.

(actually I have no idea where it attaches, but your engine should go in your livingroom in a glass case anyway.)

I don't remember exactly- but I think it ran from one of the bottom oil pump cover nuts to somewhere near or on the rear right engine mount.

I can look tonight if you still need the exact location.

Oh- and that engine looks incredible. Fantastic job!

It goes on one of the lower bolts by the speedo/trans oil pump housing. Over a year ago now, but mine was on the longest bolt, ie if the housing was a mountain, one bolt goes in it at the peak, and is longer as a result. It had two washers IIRC.

Thanks for the input. So, I can bolt the strap to the trans oil pump housing but where does it attach to the frame? Seems like I should be able to figure this out but I'm trying to get it 'perfect'. Yea, I'm a bit anal...

Dr. Tommy, while the engine was out we magnafluxed and checked everything, honed the cylinders and installed new valves, valve guides, springs, seals, piston rings and main and rod bearings. Luckly the block, pistons and heads were OK. I agree it really belongs in the house but my wife didn't think so. So, I put it back in the car. (Photo attached)

Jdubbya, thanks for the kind words. It's been a labor of love which is finally coming to completion.

dpospres, NO you can't have it! Make your own!

Big Al, yep that's the ground strap. But of course it doesn't explain where it attaches. Hey, I'll figure it out!

bretm, where does the other end mount? To the frame or engine mount?? Where in Northern NJ are you? I once lived in Budd Lake. Know where that is?

    Thanks

The machining was done by John Edwards from Costa Mesa Automotive R&D in Costa Mesa, Ca. The bottom end assembly was done by Theo Sahli of Sahli Exotic Cars in Newport Beach Ca. Both great guys to work with. I'm doing the final assembly so I can get it running, then on to paint. Sure hope I can finish the car for Monterey in August.

    Lou,
send it off to paint without engine installed.
the paint shop will get overspray or dust or whatever all over your engine.

Lou, same engine as on my 3.2 Mondial - the ground strap attaches to the engine in the same location as indicated above, and, attaches at the other end to the frame rail near one of the lower suspension points on a special stud. This particular stud is unique because it has a raised area around the base in the shape of a circle with many angled notches - similar to a lock washer not of the single split variety but rather the multiple notches variety. Obviously, this is to try to maintain continuity at the chassis end via "biting" into the ground strap rather than having it lay flat against the fraim rail where, inevitably, corrosion will build up and continuity is lost. Get under there and poke around - you'll find the right place. Good luck!

Carmine, I don't remember what size hoses I used. I'll check when I get back to my shop in a few days.
Slewman, Engine out is the way I've done the last 10+ cars. But this one is going to paint with the motor in place. I know it sounds crazy doing it this way but the body shop is 2 doors down from my shop and I'll do/help with the bagging and masking.
Cliffbeer, I located the 'special stud' you're talking about, I think. Is it a 6mm threaded stud on the frame where the upper rear 'A' arm mounts?

Cliffbeer got it, it'll be down where the rear of the lower A-arm mounts though. It should be an 8mm stud though (13mm nut) IIRC. I can't remember if it's on the main frame rail or the crossmember where the engine mounts attach to though to be honest. I'll take a look tonight in case no one else checks.

Been out to Budd Lake a few times, one of my old man's buddies lives out there, used to have an indoor go-kart track. I live in Montvale, like 20 mins from the GWB up the Palisades Pkwy.

The stud is on the rear crossmember just below the passenger side rear engine/trans mount. It points towards the front of the car and is 8mm from a quick glance.
