Hi 348 owners, I had a wicked thought, I was looking at my mates 360 on Friday and thinking wouldn't it be nice to have a glass/perspex engine cover like that on my 348. I was looking at buying a used lid, cutting the gills strips out , then having the piece made. Does anyone know of anyone that has done that to there 348, Ive seen the 355 backends & carbon kits. Lets us know also is the piece heat resistent glass or perspex.

I think that lid looks pretty sharp. I see that car has Zagato's signature double hump roofline as well.

Would this make the engine run any hotter? I know after a hard run in mine you can really feel the heat coming out of those rear vents when parked, and Id imagine that alot of heat flows out of there when you are moving.

I would imagine it would make the engine bay hotter. It is one of the reasons 355's and 360's have the option of a challenge grill. The closed engine bays are good for keeping out water, but not so good at keeping out heat.

That's a great looking engine bonnet...but it needs a vent option like modern SUV's have on their sunroofs (where the sunroof pops up vertically an inch or two).

I think that design definitely shows the potential for this idea, but you'd be better off fabricating something rather than dealing with Zagato. *If* those parts still exist, I can't image the price would be justifiable.

I've always thought this was an interesting idea. In fact, Andre of KAZ Automotive, (did the full carbon fiber interior in my twin turbo 348), actually has the templets, for a replacement engine cover. He has designed one of carbon fiber and lexan. To my knowledge, he's not yet produced the prototype. Why not get in touch with him and see if he'll work you one up?
Keep in mind, Andre does beautiful work. This leads to LOTS of business for him. Consequently, he's VERY bUSY. You might have to be persistent to get him to respond.
    Good luck. Keep us posted.

I spoke to Andre several months ago and it was my interpretation that he was working on an f-40 lexan style decklid somewhat similiar to the 355 design.

I'd definately be interested in this but have not seen any posts about it's availability.....

Quote from Zagato Oltre magazine, 1991:

"Other novelties include the engine cover, in which a section of 4mm thick heat resistant glass has been inserted to allow vision of the Ferrari's heart, the engine itself."

That's a pretty fancy engine lid, with the glass cover, and 8 vents, and an electric spoiler.

Paul Koot, who was effectively behind the 348 Zagato creation - told me that the idea wasn't profitable even for 25 examples. There are only a few 348 Zagatos made (3 or so). His Lancia Hyena Zagato project was not a big success either, only 20-25 examples. I doubt you will be able to obtain a Zagato bonnet for your 348 but if you really want to try to contact Paul Koot in Holland.

    Ciao, Peter

Maybe it could be done more simply, without the spolier & electrics?

I'd try to do it so it could easily be converted back..ie. keep the original and use the stock body mounting parts.

Ha! That actually might be the easy part, as the Enzo appears to use the 348 Zagato spoiler/electrics as best that I can discern from photos. Order it up from Ferrari!

Hi thanks fellow 3458 bros, i think id skip the spoiler, and just stay with the deck lid that way if I ever wanted to sell I could refit the original deck. I've made a few notes on my mates 360 < I need to get a price on heat resisent glass. The 360 air vents look so much better than the zagato one, it stream lines suit the car better. It will be trial and error.

No kidding! This is amazing but imagine the pain in keeping the compartment *bling*, you wouldn't want people to peer into a dirty "guts" do you?

Anyway, I saw that the Pagani Zonda F uses a piece of perspex over the engine compartment. Could be a higher spec polycarbonate? There was a Gallardo owner here who had a shattered engine glass cover. Imagine the bits all over the engine bay!
