    Hey dudes,

Any one ever bring over one of these? If so, how much did it cost to convert it to be a legal car over here in the states? What was the total cost?

I know some people are really paranoid about posting 'exact' numbers, so if any one could post a general amount for the conversion + actual cost it would help me out a great deal.

    Thanks

I have no idea of what you are asking.
All I can tell you is that I saw one last week and it is AMAZING.
The price in Mexico is $360,000 usd. Only one in the country yet, the one I saw Black on black.

Well, any information on the purchase experience on one of these would be appreciated or, any one that may know someone who bought one, what the whole process was like. I know these weren't brought over to the states and if my source serves me correct, only 250 were made for purchase. My concern is, obviously the price but just as significant, maintainence. *shudder* Would Mercedes Benz dealers even take the car in?

In regard to the car being AMAZING...ahhh I wish I could have been there with you, all I've seen is pictures...but I don't doubt your AMAZING for a second!

You can import one but only under show and display regulations, meaning you are only allowed to do 2500 miles a year with it.

Ugh...that's what I hate about car regulations, we can't even have the r34 skyline or the previous models without some kind of conversion.

The regulations you're speaking of, regardless of my intent to 'show it off' at shows and such, driving it 2500 miles or less is acceptable? I had always thought that to bring a car over and actually 'drive' the thing one would have to get a conversion done to make the car legal.

This way of importing cars is easily doable, considering somebody else already imported the car and it is on the show and display "list. The car has to be very rare for that(hence it doesn't work for the skyline). There is a small list of cars already eligible for show and display, because someone already imported one and did all the hard work, so now it is on "the list" and is eligible for importation under the show and display regulations. If I remember right the only test your car will have to pass is a smog test.

From what I recall, additional show and display rules include:
*You must agree to own the car for 25 years unless you are approved to sell the car by the DOT
*You must also agree to keep the car insured for 25 years.

I don't know where you heard that from, but I know of a few cars (911 GT1 and a couple CLK GTRs) for sale that are registered under Show & Display purposes. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ShowDisplay/howtosd072003.html

It still doesn't force you to keep it, it is simply that until it is 25 years old, it has to stay under the show and display regulations(2500 miles a year). It makes sense considering you can legally import mostly any vehicle that is 25 years old or older.

That link is dated from 2000. The link I posted is currently on the NHTSA DOT's site is the most up to date and mentions nothing about the 25 year rule for Show & Display.

The only rule used for importation that deals with 25 years is that if a car is 25 years or older, it doesn't have to meet EPA and DOT requirements. All you have to do is check the first box in the HS7 form and you're done.

Here's are the cars that have been deemed eligible for Show and Display as of June 20th, 2005. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/ShowDisplay/sdlist06202005.html

You're right, they may have repealed the rules about ownership and insurance since 2000. Like I said, it's what I remembered about the importation law (and I didn't even remember it right). It had been a while since I read through the Show and Display rules.

Steve, Is the CLK DTM coming also to your dealerish? I called about 1 week ago, talked with Benjamin about the 959. I will call again in 1-2weeks to know when the 959 is coming in, would like to see the CLK DTM also if possible. Very excited that the 959 isn't silver and is indeed Guards Red :)... Canepa.com has a 2006 CLK DTM for $550k (!!!!) in the USA. The CLK DTM is an amazing car, but some part of its allure is that is outperforms the SLR at a much lower price point. At that price, you might as well get an SLR.
