It would make sense if space was a consideration but the lots have sideyards bigger than the backyards of most new SoCal homes. I'm pretty sure the three-car garage is filled with crap as they park both cars outside.

Either way, it just doesn't make sense how you can be smart enough to afford something in this price range and turn a blind eye to some pretty basic sh*t.

Pour BBQ lighting fluid on them and set them on fire. They will melt into a pile of bubbling goo (make sure they are on the sidewalk or somewhere that the fire won't spread). If the dumbazz tries to go stamp it out, well, he won't do THAT again!

Allow me to go against the flow here ... big deal. Garbage cans on the sidewalk. As long as they don't attract stray dogs or racoons and that the trash doesn't get splattered all over ... I would not give a crap (legal or not is none of my concern ...)

Well from your profile it looks like you live in a nice neighborhood, but do we really need to get the authorities involved?

Just go to their door and ask them if everything is alright, and that you're worried because the trash cans never seem to move from the sidewalk. Then say to them they should move the trash bins inside or to the backyard because it makes their house look vacant, which might be a target for burgulars.

I never suggested getting any authorities involved, I just wanted to know if there was a way to get the trash stuff out of sight without pissing anyone off.

I'm not going to "act" like I'm concerned because the house doesn't look like it's vacant and they're both able-bodied individuals with young children. They're just lazy, and there is no good way to bring that up without being insulting on some level. We share a common wall so I'd rather not wake up to a chain-saw making some 'alterations' to the 15-foot hedge separating the properties.

They only pick up one day a week. The cans should go out the night before and in the day of pick-up. This shows no class.

City ordinance would cover I would hope.

Don't you have an association that you can report it to? In my neighborhood if you leave it out an extra day they send you a letter and next time is a fine. Them leaving it out constantly is lame, perhaps just speak to the guy, unless he is a complete idiot, than go with getting the city involved.

I think I'll leave mine out once it gets picked up tomorrow morning.

It's just too much work to wheel them back in, open the gate, make two trips, etc.. and then have to do again next week? I'd have to be nuts!

HOA is pretty relaxed around here because it's full of long-time residents (this house was the only one sold on my street in the last 15~ years) who take immaculate care of their homes without being told to do so.

They're also focused on annexing land behind the homes (which would almost double every lot), but that's another story..

Put a sign on each of their garbage cans that reads: "MOVING TOMORROW. PLEASE TAKE CANS AWAY AS TRASH".

    Alright...heres another point of view...

I was in the position of your neighbors... my cans had sat outside for several months and I simply never noticed as my assistant takes out the garbage and generally deals with anything related to the house.

Im single, very busy and very preoccupied with my business and I wouldnt notice if my grass was three feet tall - thats what i have an assistant for.

One day my neighbor came over as I was leaving in the ferrari and mentioned VERY NICELY that the street looks much nicer if the trash cans arent out all the time. I said 'Im sorry..I never thought about it' and told him it wouldnt happen anymore. We then talked about my cars and how the neighborhood thinks Im a drug dealer since Im fairly young, have long hair and seem to come and go at all hours of the night...lol

anyway.. it could be that they simply have no class ( I certainly dont as I grew up very white trash) and just havent thought about it.

I do know that if they did any of the 'nasty' things you guys are sugggesting my retaliation would make all of their heads spin. The fact that he was pleasant made all the difference.

    Judge as you will...

You should politely talk to them or better yet write them a very nice letter with your name and address on it. People dont like anonymous complaints.

If you dont want to do either, then call the city. There is definitely an ordinance, every city seems to have one. They will give them a warning and possibly a small fine. It will solve the problem quick. Most people will think someone "at the city drove by and saw it" -- they dont know it must be called in. So you wont upset them too much thinking it was a mean neighbor.

I agree. One of my neighbors called the COPS on me because I parked my truck in front of the house alot instead of in my driveway. ( I live on a corner and the complaint was that I was parked too close to the corner) The cop was actually embarassed to tell me why he was knocking on my door, and when I asked which neighbor it was he said he didn't know. So I pointed to every house within 3 houses on either side, and across the street, and I named them, and told him I didn't think any of them would have called the police on me; if my truck was in their way, I know them well enough that they would have told me themselves. The cop was REALLY apologetic now and finally gave me the name of the complaintant, and when I checked the tax rolls on my street, it was someone four houses down that I'd never met, let alone ever SEEN!

I don't really have a point, other than that I probably would rather they came and introduced themselves and asked me nicely, rather than CALL THE COPS!

Later on, I finally noticed a car coming out of the house, and it was what looked like a 90 year old man hunched over the steering wheel and driving 4 miles an hour down the street. ****ing old people.

Perhaps they're not aware of the local ordinance, besides being oblivious to the fact that no one else in your neighborhood leaves their trash cans on the curb. I have neighbors like that but they just don't give a sh*t-they know the rules. Their dog is never on a leash, sh*ts all over the neighborhood, etc.

In my neighborhood you have until 6 a.m. the following day after trash pickup to roll your cans back out of view or the city does it for you...and then they fine you.
