308: Carbs , Intakes, Oh my!

    great idea!!!! :) i was really think about blocking them off, but i am thinking i may sell the 308 soon for a euro or a v12 something, and i dont want to do things to it that cannot be easily undone. i hate points and its the next thing i do , if the car is going to be around here for awhile~!

    Good point on the shaft grease Peter, I was going to suggest the same thing. It would be a shame to put the whole thing together to find the leak is the throttle shaft and have to yank it all apart again.

    I was using Esso UNIREX EP-2 grease, but I switched to Lubriplate #630-2 now as I felt it was a bit thicker when rubbing it on my finger-tips. After assembling all the linkages and the bearings with this stuff, it all moves smoothly with no drag. Should stay in place.

    Yes, I could've and should've used sealed cartridge bearings, but seeing as I'm pressed for time for this trip to Concorso, I'll stick with regreasing. Besides, I don't look forward to pulling the throttle shafts and plates out of carbs...

    I put roughly the same amount on mine before I put it up on jack stands for 4 months. That was a year and a half ago. The work you are doing now will pay off down the road in driving enjoyment.

    One note when checking for vacuum leaks. I use a small propane bottle fitted with a 1/8" dia. tube instead of liquids. Safer than spraying flammable liquid around the top of your engine.

    Just turn the gas on and stick the tube in and around all of the gaskets and shafts. If you have a vacuum leak the RPM's will rise. It's easier to pin point exactly where the leak is too.

    stunning idea, but isnt propane WAY more explosive than carb and intake cleaner???? dont laugh but i have never really messed with it, other than using a propane torch to heat up stubborn fastners. car is well insured, maybe i should try it!!! :)

    The tube that it is coming out of is tiny, 1/8" tube has about a 1/16 I.D.. The bottle is one that plumbers use, quart size, medium pressure. To use the set up just crack the valve. If lit it will produce a pretty good flame but when in use (unlit) there is no way any quantity of the gas can accumilate enough to ignite much less explode. The quantity of gas is far less than numerous squirts of carb cleaner. Note; Carb cleaner and a Bic makes for a HUGE blow torch. (don't ask)

    Make the tube about 16" long so you aren't sticking the bottle down on top of the engine.

    My brother has been using this method for 25 years and he hasn't blown up yet.

    Go out in the back yard and experiment on an inverted dog dish and you'll see how long you have to run this thing just to get a flash out of it. Quite a while. Oooops, TMI..........................................

    these are the old pics. notice the pry points to remove the intakes. also do not use all that damn silicone on the gaskets, i had to redo mine to fix some vaccum leaks due to warped intake flange mounting points. i used a flat file and a thick pice of glass as a flat surface to get a flush fit. also, weber carb bases tend to distort over time.

    sorry for the delay in posting these. been a busy week for me, playing with the Lambo :) .

    thank you, coming from you that means alot. i am not an authorized / trained "ferrari / lambo" tech, but i do want to try and add something to the community for all those guys like me that are doing this themselves BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO !
    i have put together a few things for the urraco and jalpa that i am going to post. best.

    one other thing on the 308 intakes, i cut down a 1/2 inch and a 10,, open end wrench, to get the carbs nd nuts off. its best to do the right front carb first when going back together and work counterclock wise to have more room to swing the small wrench to get the nuts tight. i used a VERY SMALL dab of lock tight on the ccarb base studs.

    after a few heat cycles i re checked all the fasteners. i also bent a long screw driver a certain way to facilitate access to some of the fasteners.

    i have more pics of this process from 2 of the 3 308's i had, if anyone needs anything specific i can look through the file and share the pics.

    I don't relate to some of what was in the last post, but I found a Craftsman 7 & 8 mm ratcheting wrench very helpful in pulling/re-installing my carbs!

    it was a 10mm wrench and a 1/2 inch i cut down.......


    sorry for the typo's i have the Jalpa apart doing small stuff so i can do some great driving when the weather is better.

    Michael, thanks for re-posting the pics. After soaking for two days in Aerokroil, my intakes came off without too much trouble, using those pry points. When I got the intakes off though, I had a nasty surprise, as you can see in the pics. The small coolant passages in the head were completely blocked with tons of scale, corrosion, and swollen gasket material. A long-ago PO must have run the car with coolant and tap water, or just didn't change the coolant for a long time. Needless to say, I'm glad I took my mechanic's advice and pulled the intakes along with the carbs.
