I Need to Remove and reposition the rearview interior Mirror on my 512 BBi.
How do I lift the glued attatchment surface off of the interior windshield without cracking the glass.

    I Know!" Carefully!"

I dont Think this is a heat related glue.
It is like that clear thin Superglue.
I am afraid the glass will come with it!

If it is a "Superglue" type of adhesive (can't remember the name of the specific chemical), use nail polish remover.

I would call an auto glass shop like "Penn Glass" or "Triumph Auto Glass" or someone like that. They do this all the time when they replace windshields. I'm sure they all just don't bust 'em all off.

    Maybe they can recommend something.

Would that be acetone? If you use that, make sure that you wear gloves and have lots of ventilation. We use to use that stuff to clean scuff marks off fiberglass sailboats. It works so good that it's scary. Acetone is so thin it appears to go right thourgh your skin. It can't be good for you.

The adhesive is a vinyl. Use heat, just not too much. Either a lighter or small torch to localize the heat.

Try using a razor blade style scraper, like what's used to scrape stickers from glass. Bump the blade into the bottom of the adhesive somewhat forcefully while applying an upward pressure on the mirror stem. This has worked for me with epoxy/glued and adhesive backed units.

I think it is the same as mine, The gt4 uses a Carrello trapezoid shaped double adhesive pad. Exact same as on the 914 porsche and some old 911's. Alcohol and or heat will take it off unless it has been glued on. I pried on mine for hours and 2 drops of alcohol and it fell off. The pads have a tendency to come off on real hot days, never gets that hot here. If this is like yours hold the mirror up in the middle where you can see behind and have a friend mark the glass on the outside with a felt pen. Wipe off with alcohol glass and mount, apply the pad to the glass first, as the mount is hollow and if you put it on first you cannot burnish the entire pad to the glass, carefully apply the mount and press, not too hard I have heard of guys breaking the screen either removing or attaching the mirror!

    Good Luck
