Some people will probably be offended at the very notion of this post, so better not to reply for those folks :)

For those that are into guns and preparedness, I am curious what you would keep as part of your "#$*@ hits the fan" preparedness kit? I'm not talking flat-tire-on-the-highway, I'm talking the whole city just flooded, or there are riots going on, or a nuclear bomb was just set off nearby, or we are under attack, etc, etc.

You need to worry about protection, sustenance, basic necessities (warmth, information, etc).

So can you guys who have thought about this add to the list? This would be the ideal, no-holds-barred, cost-no-object approach, the "if you could choose anything, what would it be"

Proection. I think you would want more that one firearm. A shotgun definitely, a pistol (or maybe better off with a revolver), and a magazined rifle.

Sustenance. You would want water, some sort of food that ideally would last a long time and not go bad and provide adequate nutrition. Also backups of any medication you take as well as some basic medications (pain killers, antihistaimes, antibiotic, etc)

Basic necessities. Some warm hard wearing clothes. Flashlight. Batteries. Transistor radio. Basic tools. Flares. Waterproof matches & lighters. Fire starting tinder/lighter fluid.

What else would be on the list?

I know it may sound paranoid, I'm not saying this is militia-take-over-the-government stuff, just always wanted to have a box or a duffel bag somewhere that would be ready to go should a bad situation ever develop. Of course, any firearms would not be stored in a bag along with that other stuff, but rather seperately in an approved gun safe nearby.

We're just afraid that it might get moved to P & R. That, and I'm worried that the great "W" machine might be eavesdropping.

OK--I'll play. In our earthquake kit we have the following (not a complete list, but hightlights). Flashlights that don't use batteries. Transitor radio (I should spring for one that doesn't require batteries). Coleman lantern. Coleman stove. Multitool. Knife. Duct tape. Tarps and ropes. An small assortment of fasteners (nails, screws). Wrecking bar. Backpacking water purifier (in the Pacific Northwest, lotsa places to use it). Medical kit. Flares.

Also (not in that kit) weapons, cash, etc.

At the end of my street is a few thousand acres (w/livestock) that would make an ideal "wait it out" spot so I keep about 20 gallons of water, canned goods and some camping gear together. Considering riots and floods are less of a possibility than an earthquake, a wrench to shut off the gas and a hand-cranked radio are also essential.

As for using a firearm to defend my "stuff", I could care less about what someone takes from me when everyone is out of the house (and I guarantee that everyone will be when the time comes). The only situation I can see needing something of that sort would be in a situation (nuke) that required a massive relocation to an area far away.. it'd make sense to have a shotgun/handgun nearby but I honestly doubt that I'd be grabbing anything besides my car keys. I don't know if I'd even open the garage door before I threw it into reverse and got the hell out of L.A.

As much clean water as you can possibly store for drinking, other water for hygene, non-perishable food, $2000 cash. The rest of your list is pretty complete. Extra fuel for getting out of town would be good, too. And an old International Scout to make sure you can get there, wherever there is.

As far as firearms, I'd take a Remington 870 and a Colt Python .357.

Along with food/water/flashlights, I'd get 'his and her' Sig Sauers (maybe the .45 P220), an MP5, and a longer-range HK rifle.
