Well it really happened only because Todt threw in the towel because the team and Todt were focused on Herr Schumacher. It took Montezemolo to straighten them both out (Todt and MS) and remind them, that they are employees of Ferrari and not of the Schumacher collection. Unfortunately by then the damage was done. Jack, I meant somebody who never won the title. But Speedysam is right, Moss didn't win it by even less and so did Von Trips (zero points difference, but less wins). I have to bury that statistic or add "in modern times". Regardless, Eddie is a champ in my heart.
I think Eddie is right, MS is NOT a great driver ANYMORE, and why should he be? He WAS a great driver but why should he push 11/10ths? He's married, has kids and is a millionare...why risk it all for another championship? You can't blame it all on tires...
Ya he went from total domination in 04 to being just an alsoran in 05. His skills must have erroded incalculably over last winter
Ooh, some pretty harsh words about MS in the last 2 posts. I disagree with you guys. If/when Schumey gets a competitive car in his hands again, I think he will be able to show his stuff again.
Totally agree. Shumey had a junk car, and junk tires. When he retires from Ferrari, I would love to see him saddle up in the Toyota and do it at least one more time. Win a championship that is. He would have an extreamly tallented tech team behind him, plus they have deep pockets, and the drive to win. Ralph didn't do so well, but he doesn't have the natural tallent that Micheal does. Even though Micheal is getting old, in F1 terms, I still feel he could give Toyota the championship they are looking for. Then if he did they would be no way any one could argue about his greatness. Face it. We are lucky enough to be able to watch a guy that is a living legend, that will be talked about for years and years long after he has retired.
With regard to Prost's losing out to McLaren team mate by half a point in the (84 was it?) World Championship. This was down to the rain shortened Monaco GP (the famous race where Senna in the Toleman chased down Prost in the closing stages before race marshall Jacky Ickx stopped the race due the torrential rain). The FIA saw fit to award half points to the top finishers of the race. And, even though Prost won it, he was rewarded with 4.5 points rather than the full 9 which was the points structure at the time. Looking at this and other circumstances wherein Prost narrowly lost out on the World Championship during his days with Renault, he could well have been a seven time World Champion as well; this in the days when a single pit stop would cost the race and tires had to be managed to get to the finish. No, Ferrari screwed him when the mishandled his pit stop in Britian costing him a win and 4-points and again in European GP (Nuremburg) when they lost his tire and he finished with no points instead of the easy to finish 3rd and a net 5 extra points (Mika Finished 5th and Irvine 7th so a 3rd place would have put Mika 6th at 1 points and Irvine 3rd at 4-points; 4+1=5). Remember, in 1999 the points were 10, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 So Ferrari cost him 9-points which would have given him the title, even with a 3rd place in Japan that year.
Yup - it's that time of the year!! The lull before pre-season testing takes off and we relive every painful episode of the past! I was actually hoping that Irvine became the 11th team owner in 2006.
i guess u can;t blame a man for his passion. as schumi always said, racing blood has always been in his veins.
Ah, so you did see the Chinese GP! Master he may have been, and may still be, but he was definitely driving like a has-been in that race. One who is the Master of F1 doesn't smash into a backrunner when driving to his grid spot, and the Master certainly doesn't spin off all by himself behind the safety car... Regards, Gordon
All season? Believe me it was more than just tires! Schumi is great, no doubt, and he can regain his dominance IF HE wants to. I just don't think he wants to anymore. It's not that he lost his skill over a winter, he lost his drive and passion to win and it showed BIG TIME. For example, remember when MS came over from Benneton? Ferrari had a mediocre car and he did amazing things with it. He pushed to the limit, I don't see him pushing to the limit with this mediocre car.
