308 caliper rebuild kits- which ones?

Howdy folks-
I'm in the middle of a 308 QV suspension/brake/steering rebuild, and had a question on the rear caliper rebuild kits.

I've bought and installed the kits for the front calipers, but need info on the rear rebuild kits. I've done a search and found conflicting information- some say the Porsche 914 kits, some say the 74-89 911 kits work for the rears, but not the handbrake kit. I'm confused- not out of the ordinary for me.

I'm probably just going to replace the piston seals and dust boots. Nothing leaks on the calipers, but the pistons are a little crudy. I've cleaned the pistons and cylinder walls- all looks fine.

Any help from people who have installed these ATE kits on the rear calipers of a 308?

Here is a photo of the kit that worked perfectly on the front calipers I bought from Pelican Parts (porsche parts supplier) for about $14 each. An amazing price!

Just go to allferrariparts.com and have Dennis send you the ones! Cheap and right.

 

Front calipers are the same as a 911 SC (78-83)
Rear calipers are the same as a Porsche 914-6 (factory original 6 cylinder car). Do not confuse with the standard 914 (4 cylinder) car, whose calipers are smaller.

That very same ATE kit is what you'll get if you call allferrariparts.com . You can give them the part number from your service parts book that everyone seems to have and you'll get it, something like $16. Why keep shopping around?

 

I see the kit on allferrariparts.com for $58, not $16. There is a part # 95691536 (ATE #13.0441-3811), but I can't find that number on any other sites. Please point me to the $16 kit- I'm sure I am missing something. Thanks-

What does it matter what the part number is? Do you need one? Go to a store, tell them you need a brake rebuild kit for the rear disks on a 914-6 (6-cyl.) and see how much it is.

I don't know that it's a Porsche specific part. I just know there is a cross reference to the ATE caliper for the Porsche and it is the same as the Ferrari.

 

I didn't ask for advice on how to shop for parts Sean.... I asked for a part number... If you don't know fine.

OK maybe I didn't make it clear... the 4 places I've checked ONLY have the part listed for a 914.... not a 914/6.... It doesn't even show up as a cross reference. SO I'll ask again. What is the part number?

This place sells a lot of Porsche, BMW and some Ferrari stuff. They sell ATE and other brands. Their prices and service are unbeatable--if I order a part at lunch one day it is on my doorstep the next! I just bought the updated 328 brass fuel injectors (Bosch) for $28 each.
Patrick Bright has been very helpful to me and I'm sure he will help you find the ATE part numbers. If you want, you can tell him I sent you to him.

the 914/6 caliper is just wider than the 914 caliper, because of thicker, vented brake disks. This is performed with washers between the caliper halfs - as on the 308.
Therefore meaningless regarding the piston seals and dust boots.
It's only significant regarding the length of the caliper bolts and brake mounting hardware. Even the handbrake mechanism bits are the same.

So- 308 caliper rebuild kits in summary:

front: Porsche 911 FRONT (74-89) steel caliper kit will work
rear: any Porsche 914 REAR kit will work

this is for piston seals and dust boots only?

Thanks, and I'll post my findings on the rear kits- should be this week sometime. I've already ordered (2) 911 rear kits, but it sounds like I will need to exchange them for 914. We'll see.

The 914 and 914/6 caliper rebuild kits are NOT the same because the 6 cylinder model has a 38mm piston, whereas the 4 cylinder version has a 34mm piston.

The 308 and the 914/6 calipers are identical.

I went through all of this 20 years ago to upgrade the brakes on my 914/4 auto-x car.

since the calipers are the same, could i just buy rebuilt porsche calipers and switch them.

 

The e brake looks identical. the only area of difference may be the spacer between the caliper halves. When i did the 914/6 rear brake upgrade to my 914/4 auto-x car, i installed a spacer from a 911 rear ATE caliper with longer bolts to enable me to use the bigger 911 rear vented rotor as opposed to the solid, (but still bigger than the 914/4) rotor.

Wayne at pelican parts may have an answer for you.

I've got to get off to work, but check the thickness of each rotor, should work if they are similar.

I purchased rebuild kits for 74-83 Porsche 911 and they worked perfectly.
This was for the piston seals and dust boots only- no rebuild parts for the hand brake.
