I have replaced my thermostat in my '85 308 and it runs well. Here's the catch, often the temperature guage starts to read that it is getting hot but I know that it isn't. I slap the edge of the instrument cluster right beside the temperature guage and the needle pops down to where it should be. What can I replace to solve this? Is it the sending unit? The guage itself? Need help.

    Thanks,

    Matt

Clean the contacts on the sending unit and the gauge and see if that helps

And if that doesn't work send the guage to Palo Alto Speedometer Service

You may also have to send them sending unit so it can be calibrated properly.

Sounds like the gauge is shorting to ground, but very slightly. Check the connections.

It's not the sender unit, tapping the instrument cluster would have no effect on the sender unit. Remove the guage and check the connections on the rear of the guage, if that doesn't fix it its either a replacement guage or repair.
